Obvious question first - what did you do last before it started doing this?

The fact that the screen is going mad may indicate a video card problem. Have you tried another card?

not yet - will try tomorrow. I opened a game in windowed mode and when the colour went mad it happened to the whole screen , desktop included...not just the window with the game running,...dunno if that helps ?

one more thing - Its breaking even with games that used to work...for example I tried ti play Battlefield Vietnam which ive been playing on high settings for about a year and it didnt work..

i get this error msg when i try to play a game after the error has happened

"The client failed to allocates AGP memory

The Ryzom client can't allocate AGP memory. Check in your computer BIOS that AGP memory has been reserved. If not, reserve between 16 and 32 Mo of AGP memory. If it is already done, try to update your chipset drivers."

That Ryzom error looks like you might need to change your agp latency in the BIOS to 32mb, have you tried that.

Increase the AGP aperture setting in the BIOS a bit?

Go into BIOS and go to advanced peripheral settings. At the bottom should be AGP Aperture set it to double your video cards ram ie 64mb card set it to 128.

If that dose not work try setting APG Aperture size to a Quater of your overall Ram size (so 512Mb or Ram would be 128Mb AGP Aperture) or change the APG Latency which is also located in the BIOS to 32Mb.

Not necessarily. As the other guys said check the BIOS settings. If you haven't changed anything I could simply be a driver issue. Make sure you have mfgs latest driver. Is the other card you put in AGP or PCI? Could be a problem with your AGP port also. Probably just a Windows driver rather than hardware.
