A friend of mine is replacing the cd writer in his dell with a dvd writer. He simply took out the drive and replaced it with the new one using the same ribbon and power leads.

When he turns it on he gets a black screen with
    "Secondary Master 0 not found"
    "Secondary Slave 1 not found"

( not sure it thats it exactly though)

and given the option to go into sisk setup.

When he just connects the top drive it recgonizes it and starts the computer.

How does he get the Dell to recognize the second drive? It's Windows XP so drivers aren't an issue.

Sorry if I'm not making sense I wrote this very quickly.

Cable isnt correctly in the new drive and the jumpers arent set correctly.

Make sure he has them set as Master if installing on secondary. Its not a good idea to stick as primary slave .

Just got a phonecall from him. He hadn't got them set as Master. Has it working now

Sorry should've waited longer before posting.

    Thanks for the help
