Idea for a bit of fun

Right. I've got an idea that'll make playing games of yester year more interesting. How's about we run some kind of a mini competition where by someone selects a game on a specific platform, knowing that it's doable to complete it, and we then post up the ending screen grab or high score ?

I nominate Impossible Mission on the C64. So who's on ?

I like the idea, though I can't get the Commodore emulator working myself.

Would it be an idea to have some kind of rough deadline maybe as well? Say a new game every fortnight or something like that?

I'd be interested if some you were going to use some of the arcade games on mame. Never into the C64 games myself.

I think its a great idea. Was thinking about starting an Ikaruga high score thread when the game came out but ended up not doing it. I think it would work better with a shmup game since they are usually more about getting high scores. Something with score multipliers would work really well.

I think we should rotate the type of challenge involved every time. For instance:

Game 1: R-Type - High Score
Game 2: Speedball 2 - Best performance in league
Game 3: Mario Kart - Best time in X cup
Game 4: Super Mario 3 - Fastest completion time

And so forth. A platform should be chosen and people should be allowed use any emulator of that platform (so if it's SNES you could use zsnes, snes9x or any other emulator of the system).

The challenge shouldn't be all time consuming (I dunno, like fastest Zelda completion time or something). That way we should get different people interested every week.

I think the challenges should be a lot shorter than some of what you mentioned. A high score in a shooter is fine since some one can have a crack at it for 20 minutes. A fastest completion time of Mario 3 would take a bit too long and people might lose interest. Fastest laps or total time in a mario kart or f-zero type league would also be acceptable imo.

I think I'll start a thread when I get home with top score in a popular shooter such as the Cave/atlus, irem games or ikaruga. Any suggestions will be considered. Would there be enough traffic in the emu forum or will it be better in the games forum?

Its a pity Radiant Silvergun isn't emulated

Count me in. Doubt you'd get much interest in the games forum more of questions of how do I load this and where do I get the roms would come to mind.

I'll just put a warning that people shouldn't ask for the roms but put a link for zophar for the emulators in the first post.

I was thinking Donpachi for the challenge. I'm terrible at it as well so it will be a good challenge for me.

Good idea, my rainbow road and ghost valley 3 (Mario Kart) lap times were unbeatable back when I used to play it on SNES.
Although what's to stop someone photoshopping the pic or using some rom hax? .. I guess we're relying on good will here.
