Saw this on Digital Spy........don't know if it works.......thought it might be of intrest.

Before you all shell out for a ftv card from sky who seem to think it is ok to charge people to watch free commercial television try this,

If you have a yellow house card but cant recieve itv, CH4, or Five sky will tell you that you need to subscribe. I had this problem for about a week!

    YOU DON'T!

Go into the services menu on you box and enter the hidden sky engineers menu like this-

    1) Press Services on your Sky remote.
    2) Press 4 - System Setup
    3) Press 0
    4) Press 1
    5) Press Select

Then select new install. It will take about 10 mins to update software and download new channel lists. When I did this after re booting the box the extra channels were all working.

This should work on any yellow house card even ones bought on ebay. My card is not even paired with my box as I got it seperate. (although you still cant get premium channels if your box isn't paired)

    I hope this helps someone!

FTV cards do not have to be paired to a particular digibox. Provided they have been activated, they will work in any box.

However, they do 'go to sleep' if they are not left in an operational digibox because they fail receive one or more 'remain operational' signals via satellite.

The procedure you describe will have no effect - provided the card has not been disabled (switched completely off due to having been reported lost or stolen) it will 'wake up' if just left in an operational digibox for 24 hours or so.

My FTV card seems to be gone to "sleep", does the box have to be left on one of the FTV channels for 24 hrs or more for it to work or can can it still be woken up even if you are watching BBC. The thing is I am not using a "digibox" for it and it still hasnt woken even though its being on 28 East for the last few days. The card was working fine in April but I only noticed it wasnt working earlier this week. I have no access to a digibox atm. Any info would be much appreciated

Just out of curiosity, how long does a FTV card have to be out of a box for it to go to sleep?

I think it is if it is left out for over a week - not too sure though. It depends on how often keep active signals are sent, and since no-one knows for sure when they are actually sent, it's hard to tell.

I've had a number of cards, not in dogoboxes for 4/5 weeks still working.

It isn't simple, as the card might just get an update when you put it in, thus seeming OK. C4 might "go" on its own but be back in an hour.

Leave card on in channel not working or any NDS encrypted channel (Pay or FTV) would be my guess. I.e. Watching the Czech transponder on Eurobird is not likely to be useful.

The key in the card is changed periodically, it isn't a "keep alive" as such.

I would expect cards to be locked to boxes for any channel soon, not just premium ones to stop Dreambox users sharing legitimate cards via broadband with other Dreambox users. "Spidering" cards on Dream box in EU is illegal. Taking a "real" Sky card and using it in a dreambox anywhere in EU is legal (though obviously NDS/Sky Murdoch doesn't want you to do this either as it breaks his monopoly and his agreements with program providers.)

Spidering is spoiling non-Digibox use for everyone and re-enforcing Sky Monoploy as it will be countermanded making legitimate card / Dreambox useless and confincing Murdoch that ther should be no offical NDS CAM.

    Do NOT spider your card!

BTW Whats the story on ITV going (or not going) FTA

There was roumers of them doing so in March, then April, then May

Now were halfway through May and still no word

Given that theyre already on the 2D Satellite (the one with the narrow beam same as the BBC's use) I cont for the life of me see what benefit theyre getting out of encryption anyway

And even if ITV.plc (Granada Carlton et al) dont go FTA whats to stop the few remaining "Independent" ITV regions (Scottish, Grampian, UTV or Channel) doing so ?

If someone like Channel dod it they would multiply their audience overnight from FTA box users even in the UK alone being able to watch :D

If someone like Channel did it they would multiply their audience overnight from FTA box users even in the UK alone being able to watch

Maybe so but at the moment Channel are being supplied with their networked ITV programming for practically nothing (due to their extremly small franchise area) under a deal brokered many years ago by the ITA and still (as far as I know) in place

Were Channel to break ranks over encryption ITV plc (i.e. Granada/Carlton) could retaliate by charging Channel serious money for rights to networked ITV programmes which could impact on the viability of Channel

Mind you UTV or SMG (Scottish/Grampian) could take them on perhaps
