CDRW tray repair - help please

Hi and a fine morning to you All,

I've got a DELL Latitude C600 (laptop) with interchangeable bay drives (FDD, CD & CDRW).

Last night, the CDRW tray popped open on start-up (whilst BIOS was loading, well before the OS, which is XP Pro) and will not 'close' anymore (i.e. stay shut). It had been working fine since I'd got it about 2 months ago, until then.

I've trolled Forums, security sites, updated my AVG in case it was virus-borne - no luck (and no virus found either, + the CD tray doesn't do this).

So - anybody knows of an electronics (or mechanical) whiz who can help, or a of site with step-by-step DIY repair (provided it doesn't involve soldering anything)?

FYI, I'm based in Rathfarnham, there's no warranty left on anything & I'd rather repair it than buy a combo drive for replacement (they're still dear, even on eBay)...

Any help would be much appreciated.

If it's the catch that's broken and then you're only hope of fixing it would be to find a similar drive unit that's broken but has a working catch and replace your's with that. This could be rather difficult, both to find and implement. You could post a want ad in the For sale forum asking if anyone has an old drive going. Replacing the catch would most likely involve soldering though.
If it's the electronics that controlls the catch that's broken then you've probably got no hope. This would seem the most likely as it just popped open and now won't close.

Can't tell either, unfortunately. The catch on these appears to be a spring-loaded plastic 'tooth' with a curve edge, on one side of the tray close to the forwardmost edge of the tray. It seems to 'spring' OK and sounds as if it springs into an internal opening when I close the tray manually (clicking sound), but as soon as I tilt the module with the tray pointing downward, it springs back out...

Thanks for your reply all the same, much appreciated.

    Hi ambro25

What model is the actual drive? Is it a Teac CD-W216E which Dell used in their systems. If so I have a borked one that I would be happy to stick in the post to you. Its borked in that it does not write cd's but the bits you're interested in work fine.
