So my pooter's performance has gone to hell since I installed ms office. It is constantly hammering the HDD. Running XP with 256Mb ram/p4 2.4GHz/80 Gb HDD with 40 Gb free. I'd rather not rebuild the OS. Any tips on optimising? I need more memory, dont I? :(

Ms Office loads EVERYTHING at start up , knock it all off tru Msconfig and only use office when you need to.

Start /Run type "msconfig" go to Startup/Boot tab and uncheck anything Office related.

    Should be fine then.

Some more ram will see a nice proformance increase also. 512mb is recommended minimum by todays standards.

probably you have some ms office features running in the background...
like findfast or sthing like that... doing things behind your eyes...
just my 2 cents... i always customise my office installation...
rather than having quick or typical installation...
i prefer to stay away from having too many unnecessary features...

I also did the same when installing office, just installing the things i needed, Word. so if your not interested in an upgrase then you should either uninstall then reinstall choosing the customise option or do what Kdjac suggested and disable these program from starting at boot up or both.

I remember reading that MS Office loaded up some voice recognition software on XP and that it slowed everything down....and that it was the cause of ghostly goings on in MS Office i.e. typing up stuff it heard. Read this here for more info.

    msconfig?
go back to windows 98 :D
msoffice normally puts crap into the startup folder in the start menu, just delete that. also delete whatever else you find in there that you think you dont need starting up

Umm that wont do **** actually, they just shortcuts the programs still load to memory on startup.
To kill them you have to use msconfig or regedit or more drastically Uninstall :).

Safe answer is use "msconfig" start run type it in. Unsafe answer that you really shouldnt feck with it is type "regedit" instead. Msconifg/Boot tab is like a GUI for the registries start up. I wouldnt advise changing anything in regedit unless you know what you doing.
