€30 million to excavate site of M3 Tara motorway?

How many lives of present day living people could be saved or improved with that money????

If there are so many sites in the line of a motorway, how many thousand aren't and will still be intact after the road is complete.

Anyways who would ever bother excavating the sites if the road wasnt built?
Nobody!!! They should be built over and anyone who wants can find another place to dig a hole!

Tara was the traditional site of kingship over ireland for over 700 years, if you find cool stuff down there, it could be worth 30mill easily in tourism.

Nobody in ireland is colder, sicker, hungrier or dumber because we're excavating this site

but nobody would bother excavating it if it wasn't for the road so heritage groups should encourage road development. If they find interesting stuff they can rebuild it beside the road. The road would help bring tourists to the site and allow the heritage towns to concentrate on the brand rather than having a continious line of steel and rubber going through the town.

I was a bit pissed off yeaterday, hence the rant.

no, the morons who are planning the road should have ****ing paid attention to the fact that it is a WORLD HERITAGE listed area, and there are potentially hundreds of ancient sites going to be destroyed because some idiot couldn't put the line on the blueprints a few hundred metres in another direction.

€30 is less than 0.5% of the NRA budget till 2008 - and so far projects have run over so ~0.3% of realistic NRA budget...

That money would not be spent on health or safety. 2,000 Guards were promised, the reality is another 1,350 are entitled to retire in the next 3 years. Nothing has been done about the scandal of provisional drivers allowed on the road untested / unaccompanied. I know someone who did a test in the UK waiting time 3 weeks, here it was over a year. The money could be used to fund public transport, buses/trains both of which would be CHEAPER than building the equilivant roads AND have a much lower death rate per passenger.

And as historical sites go Tara is kinda important, High* King, fifth provence and all that.

*maybe they'll find out what type of mushrooms were used
