Do the dvd players that play mpeg4 and divx, play Xvid?

or is something completely different. I have a Yamada dvd player and it's refusing to play xvid which defeats the point of all the extra money i spent buying it over a regular player....

    thanks

I used to have a nice Philips DVD player but dumped it for a modded X-Box running EvoX and X-Box Media Center, plays xvid, divx, svcd, vcd, mov, mpeg etc :D
Hell it even streams movie trailers from the apple quicktime site,

Total cost was €200 for x-box and €70 for the chip (back in feb), only ever played x-box games on it once or twice.
Beats any DVD player out of the water

Yes, technically they should, if they can't it means they aren't 100% complaint with the mpeg4 spec's.

The question is, was the player advertised as an MPEG4 compatible player, or a DivX compatible player.

If it was advertised as MPEG4, there should be no problems playing XviD, if its advertised as DivX compatible, you may have problems. The reason being is that XviD is more advanced than DivX, and supports all the advanced features of the MPEG4 spec, Divx lags behind somewhat. A player that only is advertised as "divx compatible" can still play xvids, but only if you disable advanced features like 2 or more sequential Bframes, qpel, and pretty much everything else.

Yeah, i'm thinking of going down that route alright....but don't know how to solder and all that carry on.

Anyway, my dvd player is divx compatable but won't play xvid avi's....

Dude, it plays DivX, it may not play xvid, as xvid is a different codec. DivX stand-alone players only came out in the US after DivX went big, but xvid and a few other codecs proberly wont play on it, as the codec is not in the player.

They are all part of the same specification, the MPEG4 specification, so a properly implemented decoder in a dvd player will decode ALL xvids, ALL divx's, and any other mpeg4 compliant file, no matter what encoder is used.

Considar the humble mp3. Every encoder (be it Lame, Blade, windows built in crap, or whatever else you find) encodes mpeg3 compliant mp3's, and are able to be played back in any mp3 player, as the mp3 player isn't built to decode Lame encoded mp3's, its built to play back MPEG3 compliant mp3's.

Currently most hardware isn't built to playback mpeg4 compliant files, its built to playback DivX files, which is a pity. But some players are able to handle XviD's perfectly, it all depends on what model you get. Best bet is to research before you buy, but i heard the new mpeg4 players from "Kiss" are quite good in that respect, but still, research!

Think i'll get myself an modded xbox or mod one meself. Then again thats upwards of €250 vs €100 for a decent mpeg4/dvd player....

There are newer players, which can play XviD or DivX files with Bframes and QpeL. (but not GMC) They're based on the Mediatek MT1389 chip.

I have a elta 8883, and it plays *most* stuff well. There are a few files I get which playback choppy, usually because of too many Bframes I think. There's more info here:

Maybe it's a media problem then...perhaps my cdr's are causing the problem....

You can get chips that you just screw onto the X-Box's motherboard, no soldering what so ever.
Takes about 10min to mod it anc change the bios etc
Very nice results in the end :)

Really?!! Now that sounds more like my level of engineering!!! :D

I'll have to investigate so. Presume it is close enough to a pc inside....what about getting a bigger harddrive: is it simply a case of swopping in a bigger one or are they some sort of proprietary thingies?

afaik you can add in a HD but also can metwork it to a PC and stream if your that way inclined (multiroom porn )

That Xbox is looking like a good deal and there a few in the FS consoles atm.

Caball link to the chip you got ? Dont mind soldering just the actual ship that workes be grand.

I hear adding a larger hd (120GB) has some issues, such as the data being corrupted after a lenght of time, I could be wrong...

Couldn't find a link but I got a No Solder Xecuter 2.3B Lite, I'm sure there's better versions available now.
    I got it from http://www.mrmodchips.com
But you can also gets stuff from www.Divineo.co.uk

I'm running Evox with http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/ installed for my media and using the Project Mayhem interface - http://www.critikill.net/

All in all its extremely well polished and well worth the money I paid for the xbox & chip (€270 total) considering I was planning on buying a small form factor pc and turning it into a media center, total cost of that was €500+
    :D

    [EDIT]

As for installing the chip and opening the x-box, the screws are different so you'll need something to open it, other then that its basically a small form factor pc with standard hd and cd-rom and a custom motherboard and PSU (CPU itself looks normal enough) instructions for installing the chip came with it and are available on-line also,

Upgrading the BIOS and getting XBOXMC (xbox media center) is another story as you'll need to have a search on the net for the files as there not generally freely available because MS are not happy about people modding the xbox (side affect is the xbox can play copied games) also they loose out money as people buy a xbox mod it and don't actually buy games.

I have an XBox which has just been gathering dust in a cupboard for the last couple of months but this thread has got me interested in modding it and putting it to some use. I was wondering if I could mod the XBox and then using the ethernet port move over some of the many movies I have on my PC to the XBox and use it to play them on the widescreen because using my PC TV out is a pain as I have to carry it around the house :( I don't want to burn DVDs - it's a waste of good media has anyone done this, are the XBox drives mountable over the network? What would the cost be? Hopefully I can put that XBox to a good use ;)

    The answer is yes,
Thats exactly what I use it for, I have some films on the hd so I can bring it to other people's houses but otherwise my xbox has network access to stream movies/eps etc and net access via DSL to stream RSS feeds and imdb.com listings.

This is more or less what I see when I want to watch films - http://www.critikill.net/content/screenshots/screenshot15.jpg
And there been viewed over the network from a pc I have hosting them all.

Of course all the films are owned by me,
    :)

Oh and this is the XBOXMC launch screen, http://www.critikill.net/content/screenshots/screenshot13.jpg
Its much nicer to see it on a 28" widescreen though

What's the going rate for a 2nd hand xbox with dvd thingie? Cant check www.buyandsell.ie for some reason and there is a guy looking for €400 in the for sale forum (which seems a bit steep to me)

From what i researched so far, i believe its simple enough to connect the pc and xbox and use a ftp but perhaps it needs to be modded first...

Once the BIOS has been changed you can simply ftp to the xbox and backup everything and then add whatever you want to it, IP can be set manually or via DHCP.
Hell you can even have a telnet server on it,

About the original post , can a dvd containing numerous Divx files be played on these players?

Got a Philips DVP630 today and dont wanna waste a DVD , will the player read multiple files? And give me a menu ?

    kdjac

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

Generally yes, each file can be accessed by "skipping the tracks" or by a menu which is generated by the player when you pop in the disc.

My best advice would be too create an Xvid file, with your usual settings, and put on several clips, then bring that along to a shop and test that disc out in a few players, see which one works the best.

I'd advise you make one a very high bitrate clip (as high as possible) and then make one about 7000kbps and see if they playback correctly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

Works in this one , this player seriously rocks , any disc i make it plays VCD SKVCD (wtf is that) SVCD DVD +- cd anything .

Divx to CDr is handy but now have 11 movies on one dvd it even gives them correct names and pictuers of a still.

    /me hugs new toy

OK so I buy this Xecuter 2.6 Lite with the Xapter thingy which means I won't have to solder anything. I install it into my XBox and then close it all up and turn it on again just to check it works OK. On it's own though that chip will achive nothing - when I play the XBox everything will look the same - the only difference will be I can play copied games which is not my aim so I couldn't care less ( is that all the mod chip does? ). BUT I can then ftp over the XBMC onto the XBox HDD and reboot it so that my new XBox software ( dashboard? ) can run, is that right? Or is EvoX better? The most important attribute here is the ability to play back everything I trow at it. Can EvoX play QT6 mov files? It seems as if QT6 files can't be played back on the XBox using XBMC  What I will be using the XBox for is stand alone playback, it's too far away for it to be on the network so I will dump files onto it and expect it to have the software and hardware to play them back WITHOUT any PC helping/streaming it for it. Oh hold it EvoX is the dashboard. So first Mod chip then use an Evox CD and then XBMC, am I right Cabal? All the Documentation is freely available right? I have found both the XBMC and EvoX on BT sites so the software is gettable.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 28,536 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cabaal

    Not really
you chip the x-box and this allows you to install a new bios, this is what XBMC etc will run on

Not sure of the site off hand I'll try get thr url for you,
PM me if you still have no luck

    [EDIT]

Here gives info on flashing the BIOS
