Why do people insist on starting, forwarding on, trying to guilt people into, etc. signing online and email petitions (especially email petitions)

wheter it was to stop the war in Iraq, preventing the two guys that killed Jamie Bulger from getting new identities, or stopping deforestation in Brazil, the result from these are petitions amount to absolute nothing.

often the causes that the petitions are opposing are completly out of date.

But people still seem to insist on sending links, or worse, forwarding me on an email copy of the petition (to sign, and forward on to a specific address once it gets 200 signatures, usually a nonexistant address).

    AAAAARGH!!!

People forward these stupid petitions and urban legends because they are gullible idiots. I find this more sad than annoying.

Spammers probably love these petitions - must be a great way of harvesting loads of active email addresses which get included in the message each time someone forwards it on. For this reason I insist that none of my friends send me any jokes, petitions etc. which are CC'd to someone else. That way I have better control over who knows my email address. Works pretty well too - I never get any spam in my main email account.

Also, if someone sends you any of this type of stuff, it's a good idea to refer them to these pages:

I agree. All online petitions are useless.

    Apart from this one:
