    Hey

Some people in work today were talking about identity theft, but do any of you know WHY people do this? I'm not talking about the obvious financial reasons, but why don't the criminals just use fake id's to take out credit cards etc instead of ruining peoples lives by using their identities?

    - the dude

Because it all looks legit, what is the ultimate way to use a fake ID, with a real one of course.

    they just take money,
and thats how they ruin your life, by leaving you broke and in massive debt.

they dont go around pretending to be you and calling your mates muppets ;)

The thing is, credit companies do background checks and if they found that the person didn't exist, well they wouldn't give them a credit card, would they? So providing details of a real person can fool the credit company to a certain degree.

The best lies are mostly true.

The funny thing is that people still insist on throwing out heir personal details in the wheelybin : so many net users are still fearful of giving their CC numbers (even on an SSL server) but yet they'll quite happily put out their phonebill, and even bank statements into the recycling every week, or hand their card over to god knows who in a shop/restaurant/retail outlet.
