I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but it'll probably get the best replies here.

I'm going to switch from vodafone to meteor tomorrow (keeping my 087 number though), but I'm just wondering, can I switch back again at any stage? And if so, how long do I have to wait?

EDIT: nevermind, i decided not to move, I need the money more than i need a new phone..

You know im a meteor have been for ages was with vodafone before, are meteor really that bad with late messages ect? I mean even if there service is a bit worse you expect it with their call and text price being far cheaper than o2 and vodafone.

Because I really want one of those Sagem MyX5-2's. :D

Also, a lot of my friends have "made the move", so I'll get free texts to them, which will come in handy.

I thought that Meteor were getting better, what with their "100% coverage" advertisements plastered everywhere? But if there's a problem with text delivery times, hmm..that could be a serious pain in the arse.

im with metoer since april or so, I have no problems with them. Other than their trap roaming procedure, that defies belief!! Should look at it on their site for a laugh :D

The service has been great though.

in my experience, meteor are god awful. In the middle of Waterford city and can rarely get a signal, texts often arrive days late etc

They also said €130 needed to be spent on credit before the phone can be unlocked. I thought legally they were obliged to unlock it if you give them IMEI code? Can anybody confirm if this is true?

Well they do subsidise the price of the phones in a big way so they're probably entitled to get some of that back in the form of credit. I don't think they are legally obliged to unlock your phone for you as soon as you buy it. However, you can get most phones unlocked for about €20, or free if it's a nokia.

Are you pre-pay or bill-pay. If you're getting a bill phone with Meteor then you'll probably have a 1 year contract. If not you should be able to change back any time.

    For your entertainment:
The 1st time you want to roam you will need to:

    * Call us at least a week before you wish to travel
    * Confirm the start and end dates of your trip
    * You will need to register a credit card with us, for security, so we will send you a credit card direct debit mandate
    * Complete this mandate and return to us before you travel
    * Top up by €60 then call us back, telling us you have topped up and your credit card is registered and we will set you up

Next time you want to roam, once your credit card is still registered, just call Customer Care 2-3 days before you travel confirm the start and end dates of your trip, top up your balance to €60 and the service will be set up for you.
Can it really be that easy? :p
Now that is a joke. It's the same for bill pay too, you need to pre-pay €60 before you go away.

Yeah true what they require to setup roaming is stupid but their roaming rates make up for it. I got it enabled there and they only charge me 9c for a text message when on Orange UK. Their calling rates are also very good.

that procedure seems a bit long winded, basically they need a credit card mandate from you, to know when you need to be allowed roam, and a few days notice to get it working ok.

This was standard practice across European PAYG operators as far as i know due to the delay in passing info about roaming customers between networks.... Remember calling *123*xxxxxxx# anyone?
If i recall correctly some new billing system (I think it was called CAMEL (??)) meant many EU operators could share info about roaming customers in almost real time (i.e there wouldnt be much delay between you making the call and your home network being told about it).

Why Meteor cant get it working like that if you're in Europe is beyond me, but i certainly understood why it was like that for going further afield.
There wouldnt be anything to stop you running up a huge bill in the US (for example). By the time the US networks sends the data back to Meteor you could be 120.00 in debt (with meteor having no way to get it back from you).

Either way, they allow PAYG customers to roam in FAR, FAR more countries than the other 2, which suits me just fine!

    1. In my experience, Meteor in Cork gave mediocre service at best - areas where I had full signal on my Vodafone SIM gave at best half signal (using the same phone) on a Meteor SIM. Their rates might be good, but that put me off moving.

    2. Regarding the law and phone unlocking - when you buy a phone from the network, they subsidise its price (often quite heavily - even cheap crappy phones cost about 130 and upwards at full price). Hence the operator lock. Unless you fulfill your obligation to them (in the case of contracts, usually paying the network the full subsidy that they contributed towarsd the phone - in the case of top up phones, using a certain minimum credit or paying the full subsidy, depends on the network) they are legally entitled NOT to unlock it. Even when you have completed the obligation, they don't have to unlock it unless you ask, and it's usually something they then contact the manufacturer about. If you can, go through your phone's manufacturer and ask them what they can do. They will require the IMEI and proof of ownership (either a photocopy of the barcode on the side of the box, or a receipt that has the IMEI on it) at the very least - they may ask you to get your network to send confirmation that it's ok to unlock the phone. But it might work, in which case you'd save yourself some cash.

    Hope this helps...

I was travelling over to friends in Holland in August. They had all been over there since February and brought there O2 and Vodafone phones with them which worked fine. So I threw 10 euro into my meteor phone and got a flight to Brussels on my own. Got of the plane in Brussels and turned on my phone. to my supprise nothing. I had to find a bus into brussels from the airport then find the main train station and get a train to The Hague when I finally got there I found a payphone to ring one of my mates. It was late at night and I had not spoken to anyone since that morning. God Dam Meteor.

When I got back I checked their website to find that load of Crap
