Speed up avi's?

I am waiting on a cooler that is out of stock in komplett to be delivered to me and in the mean time i am stuck using a p3 500 with 640 odd mg of ram with xp SP2. I am trying to watch videos such as halo e3 and brother's in arms. Halo is a WMV and BIA is an avi. I recently downloaded media player 10 but when i play these movies the sound is find but the picture is laggy and jumpy. Now I first saw the halo video on a p2 450 w/ 512 mg's of ram ages ago so i am puzzled as to why its running slower for me now on this machine.

could it be service pack 2 or perhaps media player 10?
I know the best remedy is faster pc but its annoying me as it played on the slower one without difficulty.

    Any ideas?
The slower one had only sp1 and WMP 9 btw.

    go to start > run > mplayer2.exe
that should open up mdia player 6 which uses alot less resources than 10
    if not try http://www.divx-digest.com/software/media_player_classic.html
and get media player classic which is based on version 6 but with more features
    again saving on system resources

    hope that helps :)

This is much smoother when using mplayer2.exe but it plays no sound. As if no sound came with the clip.
    Annoying,.

strange it doesnt do that for me...

try ctrl+m or check > file> properties and see if its audio is being detected properly

It says it was unable to download a codec. the sound works for the brothers in arms clip but its still jumpy. however without sound halo2 vid is perfectly smooth.

It must be the codec not downloading thats giving me the sound probs.
Perhaps i should check my sound card settings too. maybe sound is hogging too much action. although the sound is not jumpy at all when playing in WMP10

    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/GSpot252b01.rar

open your vid files in it
see if it tells you to update your codecs
your xvid/divx codecs may be outdated causing jumpy playback
the sound could be an updated wma codec , ac3 audio or some vbr mp3 encode that your pc doesnt have a codec for

if you cant find any of the codecs on the web post up what gspot shows and ill get you a link

download k-lite codec pack and VideoLan

Also, reducing your resolution to 800*600 makes life a lot easier for your media player

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/6/1/461e47d9-bff9-4d3f-b97c-93476581f6ef/wmp6cdcs.exe

    or

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm

    should solve your problem

videolan is an excellent player but id avoid codec packs in general
but especially on an older system.
