Anyone buy this, i got it yesterday, Its excellent, very epic in proportion and i cant wait to start playing it in multiplayer. my only bad comment would be that when you highlight a builder or a commander etc they repeat the same sentence and it drives me to the point were i have to turn the volume down.

My copy is currently winging it's way to me from play.com. Been having great fun playing with the demo so far though and can routinely spank the Space Marines on hard difficulty with my Ork Boyz. Is anyone up for a few online matches soon? I'd much rather play online with boards people than some l33t American teenagers. Perhaps we could even get some form of league going?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 89 ✭✭Draíochta

Ah yes a boards league would be good!

Although if your beating space marines on the hard level with orks I don't wanna play ya.
Have you played RTS leagues before? How do they work? Do you want to organize it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 580 ✭✭✭kencleary

Ummm thats a no to the first two questions. As to the third i'll have a look at creating one alright, won't be for a few days yet though as I don't even have my copy of the full game yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭ButcherOfNog

My copy should arrive over the next 2 days, so yeah, I'll be up for some online games. Have you tried importing the beta maps and playing 1v1 with the space marines on the largest map with Annihilate only as the win condition? Tried 3 times and they beat up my Orks everytime. On a big map like that the Marines can get to their best units before you can win and once the Terminators start teleporting around the place the boyz are in for a beating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 580 ✭✭✭kencleary

Aye, even Dreadnoughts pose a significant threat to the Boyz. A nice tactic to use on the computer is to wait until they launch a massive assault on one of your strategic points then immediately send all your troops to smash their base. With a bit of luck you can wipe out their production capabilities in one strike then take your time with their massive army.

Ah i've my copy since sat now, deadly game, missions are v good, close on finished it now, playing it on hard ( its not actually that hard, i'd recommend the impossible option for anyone starting it now) ... and i'd be interested in a boards league alright

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Deadly fun altogether! Only played a few missions so far and a few skirmish games, but omg, it's great! Pity there isn't a bit of an RPG element involved akin to Warcraft 3, but you can't have everything really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

Well thats it finished there....deadly. Will certainly be playing it online/skirmish's for quite some time to come :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Yea I got my mitts on it last night and have played it a fair bit today, and got well into the campaign, not a bad campaign I have to say, but if the beta is anything to go by this is gonna be a great multiplayer game. Shame you dont get to play the other race's in the campaign though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

true, that was a bit annoying, but yeh had a few games online earlier, tis v. good, alot of teamwork and tatics if the game manages to last long enough for everyone to build up their armies...(had a great thing earlier in a 3v3 where me n a team m8 sneeked our armies down the side of a map and got behind most of their troops to their bases....terminators did teleporting to get in behind their bases and give me los to drop me troops....

prolly people who were in the beta .... like me :)

i know what am at with the Orks and have a decent idea of how to start as SM, so what race are you playing as? Most people are prolly starting online playing as SM, you should if nothing else be able to put up a fight if u build the first few things in the right order.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

Chaos Marines, tis yer only punters!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

if you play a skirmish on hard the computer attempts to do that so you get practice n dealing with it....

    SM all the way.....
though eldar look kool, entire base cloaked?

I got this game yesterday from play.com and for the first time since the win95 version of Space Hulk was releaed, we have a game that actually *feels* like you're in the Warhammer40k universe, rather than just re-enacting the game system faithfully.

    It's bloody, chaotic, and oh-so-cool looking :D

I also loved the intro video on the game - great to see things in action that you've only ever imagnied or seen art-work images of before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

Yeah tis deadly, tho tis a pitty no other vids in it, like that one was in the demo...

And another game online, hrmm yet to run into anyone who played the beta i'd say, been fairly crushing em, tho forgot about the whole force commander needed to see invisible stuff, stomped thru a guy's base, went onto the next one blew that up...and only found out then the other guy was still very much alive ;) (not so much so after the orbital bombardment, that ****s cool :) )

dem kaos boyz r soft, uz Ordinjz Boyz is hard, wez gonna stomp u :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

hrmmm 2hrs for 2 guy's to beat me 2v1 lol quality (orc's and chaos vs SM) , took 3 full blown attacks eventually didn't have the rp's to beat em off, got accused of cheating after the first and second waves, quality stuff :)

So much more about strategy than brute force tis a deadly game :) ...lovely manuevery sneeking a skull probe thingy into one of their bases the dropped in lots of terminators n dreadnoughts.... (orbital bombardment is great of stoping his tanks/troops from comming too close ;) )

i this anything like command and conquers play? cause it looks good but i want to know how it plays. i know you take control of certian areas and the more you own the more units you can create(ala Z:Steel soldiers) but is the controls and stuff similar? ie barracks and war factory for men/tanks or whatver the warhammer equivalent is? and do you use the mouse to select groups and send them to any place on the map?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭Havelock

Right I'm our of the closet, I'm playing Eldar. We get f88ked in hand to hand, but I'm in behind your defences before you can start lobbing grenades.

Had the game beta, nad the full game day of release. Would love to play some boardsters online.

This is what C&C wishs it was.

Can't wait for Imperial Guard Expansion pack.

Got this yesterday only played tutorial plays rather well.
But do you need to know anything about these warhammer lads? or is it simple upgrade the hell out of everything till you figure out who kills what the fastest?

Odd tho set my pc to low detail for some reason.

i dunno is it me or does the IG absolutely suck thats in the missions anyway... i was using em for cannon fodder...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

yeah so far they are terrible in the missions, they have the life span of unupgraded rangers i reckon, or servoids.
Anyone know how to set up a dedicated Server we could use for Boards?

Nope, a backround knowledge helps with the emmersion(sp?) factor, of being a commander of your favourite army, but anyone can pick it up and play it fine. But I suppose a backround knowledge of the armies, space marines in particular as their relgiious beliefs, the Horus Heresy etc, would explain the undieing hatred between Chaos and te Imperium. But for a good fun RTS, no Warhammer knowledge is needed.

we need a bit an ole boards league/tournament.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭BeatFreak

I've had it about a week and I can't stop playing it. I've never been a RTS fan but because of the Warhammer connection I've really got into this one. I'd defny be up for a few games online. Is there an IRC channel around for strategies and such? For organising a few games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,111 ✭✭✭tba

It dosent really play like any other RTS I ever had a go at, its more about squad based combat with the odd vehicle thrown into the fray to liven things up.

The fact that you have so many upgrades and add ons for the basic units means that its un likely you can prepare for an onslaught with one type of unit or vehicle. (although the autocannoned dreadnought is tough to take down).

Id say that its more about control of the battlefield, and for that reason I prefer not to play the total annilahation mode, but the one that requires you to hold strategic points for a period of time. That really moves the battle out on to the middle of the map and stops base builders from getting too bogged down.

    Great game.

an irc channel is a good idea, i just popped in and am sitting in #strategy.ie, i'll sort it out over the next few days. I'm all on for playing a wee boards tourny, my problem at the moment tho is that i can't host games (when i do no-one can join) and i am also unable to join some games, but most i can join .... dunno whats going on there, i'd guess its a problem on my router here but haven't got around to poking at it.

Its worth saving replays of decent multiplayer games cause u can rewatch them later in full spin-o-zoom-o-rama camera vision, alot of the cool unit animations and stuff get missed, i esp like the eldar guardians 'kung fu' style kicks in close combat ... not that it had much effect on my Big Mek, he just ripped them all to pieces anyways :)

Sounds like a problem with blocked ports or port forwarding, not that hard to fix, if your got your router from ure adsl company they sould be able to enable it remotely if you ask them to 'unblock all ports and forward all ports to LAN IP *insert LAN IP here*'. Should get it working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

6112 is the port for join'n directly, from person to person lark.
just google it for the full list of ports used....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭ButcherOfNog

I sorted it last nite, just a few ports weren't bein let thru by my router, hosted a game last nite no probs.

Have you been able to host games of 3 or more with direct host?

i haven't tried direct hosting, hosting via the online lobby is working fine now tho.

Direct hosting is a pain as each player must connnect to all others so one firewall can bugger it up.

start playing this today properly. really enjoying it up to mission 7 atm and have had a few games online.

i've direct hosted 3 other people on my 512/128 connection no bother

For the Space Marines, it is. Don't know about the Orcs, etc, tho.

    ======

Playing the demo, I think the game rules! Like C&C, but its total 3D, and you can pan around the buildings, zoom in, and "walk" along the streets. Very nice.

Won my first online game last night against Lenny.
I'm probably best with SM, but I'm trying to get used to Eldar. Their "Living God" dude (Avatar?) is excellent. I'd be up for a league if it gets organised.

Got it pretty much a week after it came out. Im a big fan of GW so i was frothing at the mouth watching the intro movie. As for MP though i only have dialup and most people would have broadband now so it would be slow as hell for me. How do you create custom banners and badges? i tried it but it didnt show up in the army painter.

Ahem... That's what the guardsmen are for. Lots and lots o' cannon fodder, with an unmerciful f*ckload of tanks! :) From playing later single player missions, I found they work quite well in large numbers. About 3 squads with a couple of Leman Russ tanks has a lot of stopping power, especially if you equip them properly. Two squads with grenade launchers backed up with one outfitted with plasma guns will take care of Orks quite well.

Anyway, there's only two IG units in the game right now. If a mod comes out for them I hope to see plenty of things like stormtroopers, Chimera transports, siege tanks and perhaps even a super heavy tank like the Baneblade or Shadowsword. *Drool*

The game itself is wonderful. People who hold back won't do nearly as well as those who expand aggressively from the start. It's all about control of the map, as someone pointed out.

Also, the Eldar are the sneakiest army I've ever seen. Buildings that can teleport and become invisible are at the same time incredibly funny and incredibly effective. A friend once built his Chaos base on top of a cloaked Eldar base, and was rather surprised when the Avatar suddenly appeard in the middle of it and began ripping things apart... :)

I got me an all-nighter session planned in Clan in Galway next week. It will be a bit fun...

Game is perfectly playable on 56k assuming you connecting rather than hosting , have played 4 people with me hosting 1 56k and 3 dsl users (i have pseudo 1mb) and 56ker played fine without any problems.

fairly easy to get into imo. i know nothing about the warhammer series in general but i was able to pick it up straight away.

i suppose if you've played any RTS game before it would help. i thought the tutorial was good as well

There have been a couple of problems installing the patch.

    Here's my story
It gives an error saying that the file is corrupted and you must re-download again.

Its rather like those non descript microsoft errors in that it doesnt necessarily mean that the dl is corrupt.
    Heres what I did.

Downloaded the 18MB file in game and got the error.
Re-downloaded the file in game and gor the error.
Downloaded from the ingame link through firefox and got the error.
Re-downloaded through firefox and got the error.

Uninstalled the game totally and reinstalled. Applied the 1.01 patch fine then tried to run the previously downloaded 1.10 patches and got the same error.

Downloaded the 18mb file from fileshack and got the error
Downloaded the 30mb international patch from fileshack and got the error.

Noticed I only had 400mb free on my hard drive and uninstalled a load of crap to free up about 4 gig.
Cleared all my temp files then ran disk defragmenter.
Then ran the already downloaded 18 mb patch that was previously telling me it was corrupt and to redownload.
    It patched the game fine.

Hope this saves somebody the time I wasted.
