I am looking for a tv tuner for recording VHS onto DVD, It must be well suported in Linux [as i might use it as a PVR in the future] and i dont want to spend much anyone got any idea? and what software would you recomend?
I was thinking about the hauppauge wintv pci or would it be worth it to pay more for a card with harware MPEG encoding?

ideally you'd have a card capable of hardware mpeg2 encoding. But if you have a fast cpu you don't need it. Hauppauge have a good name for capture cards, and i'd highly recommend em. A friend of mine has one (not sure which model) but its pretty good quality.

I am also looking into gettting a TV card. Elara and Komplett seem to have a couple, though I don't really know many computer shops as I don't normally buy hardware stuff. The main problems is that you'd have to make sure it can get our type of TV signal.

I'm planning on using it as a PVR, and MythTV looks sweet.

There was a thread about this not long ago : http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=185923
