Pc is dead... the story so far.

Bout a week ago went to turn on my pc, it powers up but it never got as far as the post. I figure the bios is currupt, therefore the mobo is dead(im good at killing mobos)

So i got a new mobo tonight. Hooked everyhing up n it still wont boot to post... I tried a different power supply but still the same.

What would cause a pc not to post apart from a dead bios???

It probably is CPU. Sorry to hear.

U can tell if its booting by listening to the HD, I think its the cpu, just took the HSF n its ****ed... I think the chip is overheating big time cause it left a big mark on the base of the heat sink(n yes i did have thermal paste on it) Tried just one stick of ram, i need to get a lend of a chip to make sure thats whats wrong.....

Well i would have suggested resetting the bios as this looks like the same effect but if theres a mark on the hs prob is the cpu. Did any dirt get in the paste?that can screw things over too

pull out the cpu then power it up, more likely it does the same thing, put it back in and power up again, if still the same, you have a dead cpu!

Ummm.... patron saint of the blindingly obvious here: have you tried it with a different monitor?

The CPU wasn't plugged in fully but since you've probably got the CPU plugged in right then its probably dead. I guess the overclocking killed it.

Tried it with 3 monitors, two motherboards n two psu's...

Tis beyond me, getting an unlocked 3.2 this week so i'll try that n see what happens...

Tried different cables and power leads, etc? Tried replacing the video card with a known good one?

Have you got another CPU to try it with, btw? I have a couple of ancient ones, but they probably wouldn't fit your motherboard, but you're welcome to try if you're desperate - probably Pentium II or so. One's square, the other's long and thin.

Yes yes yes no... If it was the gfx it'd beep r at least boot to post, happened before. I know its not the mobo. Its either the cpu r ram, 99% sure...

Well, speaking as one who once **shy wriggle** plugged the floppy drive in the wrong way in a PC I was mending and then panicked for days and tried everything.... everything else...

plug the floppy drive in the wrong way will still post bios, just get errors or when try to use the ploppy it wont work and if you notice the light is always on when you plug it in the wrong way! if the ram has problem, sometimes it will still post if its not completely dead but you get alot of error mostly wont boot into windows! I've seen a cpu die before without having burn marks or anything, just die! and everything were just the same as whats happening to unklerosco! try a different cpu and it will post and boot! almost certain on that, unless if its the ram that are dead! dead ram sometimes wont beep coz its still passing thru the signal as the pins are joint together, but no ram or not in fully will beep!
