EAC & VBR

    Maybe I'm missing something here but when I ran EAC on my new machine I see no option to make it record in VBR? I coulda sworn I had it setup to do this on the other machine but it's so long ago I don't remember or see howto.

    Anyone?

    P.S. Out of interest what details do you get EAC to write into your filenames? I used to have e.g. "01 Track" but I'm changing to 01 Artist - Track incase files go walkies on the HD and I'm confused later. :D

    I know there's an option for it, Bri - can't remember what it is offhand though (don't have a running copy in front of me!) - assuming you're using LAME as your encoder, EAC has a settings page specifically for that encoder somewhere in the compression options.

    On the subject of file names, be careful with long names - you may run into problems burning them onto CD (i.e. 31 letter limit for Joliet). I used to use the complete (if long-winded)

    {Artist] - {Album Title} [{Track Number}] {Track Title}

    ...but have reverted to

    {Track Number} {Track Name}

    ({} denoting "variables") ...as Nero whinges less and it will remain consistent :D

    Hope this helps,
    Gadget

    Check 'use external program for compression' and the parameter passing scheme to be: 'User Defined Encode"
    Set the path to where you saved the extracted lame.exe, on your hard drive. (Randomly I put mine in "C:\..." yours will be different probably).
    Additional command line options put in: "%s %d --alt-preset standard" for vbr encoding.
    Basically this will point EAC to your lame.exe (version 3.90.3 of course) and use "%s %d --alt-preset standard" as the command line. where the % point to the respective file names for EAC's use.

    make sure youve got lame installed first ;)
    i use track#_song title

    %S %D isn't needed, unless you use "User Defined Encoder" in the "Parameter Passing scheme" dropdown menu. And if you are using "User Defined Encoder" you're going to have to setup lame for writing the ID3 tags aswell, which is added complexities.

    My advice, in EAC>Compression options, go to External Compression.

    Then choose "Lame MP3 encoder" as the parameter passing scheme. That sets up all the needed options for writing the tags etc, which are quite important!

    Then point EAC towards your lame.exe file (Attached), and use "--alt-preset standard" in the "additional commandline options".

    Lastly, choose the option to "delete wav after compression" and to write the ID3 tags. Then you're done.

    If you want lower quality, lower size MP3's, try --alt-preset 160 or --alt-preset 128 (i think)

    EDIT: Rename the files .rar, and then unrar them

    Thanks guys.

    Mutant fruit - I don't see where VBR comes into those parameters? I'm not interesed in lower quality I'm interested in setting up VBR within a defined range! :)

    Like how much variance is there if I pick 192 VBR?

    well, --alt-preset standard IS VBR. It is a specially configured VBR mode that gives an average bitrate of about 180-200kbps (i think), and in many opinions offers the best quality for filesize, and is virtually indistinguishable from the origional. Thats definately what i'd recommend as the setting you use, as compared to just using a "-vbr 192" setting.

    EDIT: --alt-preset 128 gives an "average" bitrate of 128kbps, but is definately not as good as true VBR (i.e. --alt-preset standard/insane/extreme).

    read here and in this site for more info
