    Hi,
Am looking for a firewall that is a self contained unit. No time to build smoothwall or something like that. Looking for a plug and go solution for under €200. Any suggestions ?

I'm sorry to say but no firewall is plug-and-go

for it to truly work you have to audit/test/adjust/ to to one's preferences, and even still it's an ongoing process - not a quick fix, what is it going to be used for, is it to be linux based?

I've been looking at getting a linitx.com firewall ( http://linitx.com/index.php?cPath=4&osCsid=f2c642337a78ed15a385765d4e5b603e ).They are small & compact and come prebuilt with lots of open source apps (ipchains, snort etc..). I am also considering building a wrap board ( www.pcengines.ch ) and installing m00nwall on it.

This firewall will need to be small & compact , therefore I can't go with building my own from a 486 box.

From the same page - IPCop 1.3.0 128MB Compact Flash - £34.08 inc VAT

all you need is something to stick it in - perhaps a laptop with a broken screen ?

Unless you are going to tighten it down you might as well just use the features built into your average ADSL thingy.

Not exactly within your price range ... but.

    http://www.fortinet.com

We've been deploying these all over the place and they are sweet as a nut :), very easy to configure, very very flexible.

e.g. typically a basic firewall has 3 ports, LAN/WAN/DMZ and thats pretty much what they ports can be used for. Well one such feature of the fortinets is that its just a port identifier, the actual functionality can be anything you want. its very sweet.

Also pptp or l2tp vpn's for clients connecting in is a doddle to configure.

IPsec firewalling unit -> unit with them is also a dream... very very sweet machines.

    Paul
