now, i have a part time job in tesco, just while i'm in college. i recently started back at college and have decided i really need to cut back on my hours. i worked pretty much most of last year, and as a consequence made no friends, never went out, and didn't have time for study near my exams.
now, im not completely ****ing them over, i would normally only work two short shifts in the evening during the week, and saturday and sunday. i asked to cut back just to saturday and sunday this year, and my manager said she'd see what she could do, but couldn't say for definate.

now the thing is, i have no set hours in tesco, i pretty much just work when they put me down. i never agreed to any minimum hours, and i haven't signed a contract (i've been working there since november last year)
where do i stand? can they fire me for not being able to work the hours they want, even though i never agreed to anything definate? tbh i dont mind if i lose the job, its just that being fired would look bad, and i will probably need a reference from them in the future.

afaik most shopping shopping centres can/will only let people work sunday if they working a saturday and one(think its 2) shifts during the week(5-9/10)
but seems like you're there long enough, so you must be there long enough and they should go easier on you being there som time..

They can't fire you. You have no contract. Legally they are obliged to furnish you with a contract within two months of your starting work there, and in that must be included your hours of work.

They cannot insist that you work x amount of hours until they present you with a contract. They cannot ask you to leave for not working x amount of hours until they present you with a contract.

Tesco are a dodgy shower to work for anyway.

tbh i haven't had a problem, the pay is decent and i get all my proper breaks, my main problem is with the two checkout managers who are the two most incompetent ditzes ever, they're constantly forgetting things you tell them and mixing up days off, or whatever. i arranged a holiday and when i came back they gave out to me because i had been rostered for two days when i was supposed to be on holidays.

i have all my payslips from when i started so i have a record of my employment. i'll kick up a fuss if they say anything so :) thanks for the info seamus
