    hey all,

I am a new user with a Mac Powerbook G4 ( running OS X ). I have been going around some local hotspots and whenever I tried to pick up the hotspot signal and connect, I keep getting the message 'IP conflict'. I have tried disabling all the security options available but without success.

    Can anyone help me ?

    thanks a lot

    Hi Krizz. Welcome to Boards.ie!

Is your MAC set to get its IP from a DHCP server. (assigned by the network)
Or have you set it to a fixed/static IP?

Is it a public hotspot you are trying to connect to? or a private network?

    Hi there,

thanks for replying...the DHCP is enabled so the IP I should be getting is dynamic. I am trying to use a public hotspot..

    Hmm,
Does it actually get a new IP from a different Hotspot/access point?

I mean, I having another laptop running Win XP beside it and when I ran IP config there seems to be an IP there every time...so I guess the Mac is being assigned an IP as well...

Is the IP different each time?
    Can you release/refresh IP Config?

Does this just happen when using Wireless or does it happen with Wired too?

I dont have wired connections to try it out with :( I am refreshing the IP but still getting the same thing. Also it seems that I cannot completely disable the security because the mac is giving an option of WEP, LEAP, 8 bit ascii and 32 bit hex...there is no option to disable them all......

its very strange..the particular hotspot I am using require that all securities be disabled...

Do you mean your getting the same IP no matter what Hotspot your using?

To be honest I haven't used OS X /Mac wireless much, but there should be an option to use no encryption/auth.

    Usually its None/ Wep (64bit/128bit) / WPA.

Gimme a few mins to check the mac stuff for ya.

i'd suggest you create a new Network 'Location' (in System Preferences: Network) and call it something like 'Hot Spot', making sure that in the Airport Network Config: TCP/IP is set to Using DHCP and Airport set to By Default, join "Automatic"

the 'Location' allows you to have different networks instances configured for your machine - i use this method as at home there is a custom wireless set-up which needs IPs / Security etc.. so I use the Location 'Home' when connecting at home - but for Hotspots I need to leave the Airport config with DHCP and no security so there I switch to the 'Hot Spot' location - you can easily switch locations from the Apple menu in the future

have also removed all the other Network Port configs leaving Airport only for the Hot Spot Location (i.e. removing Ethernet/Modem/Bluetooth) - make it easier to see what's going on / configure as Airport would be the relevant connection mentod for a Hot Spot

if there is no security set up on the Access Point you are trying to connect to you shouldn't get prompted to enter any password/passkeys...

P.S. make sure you have run Software Update to ensure you have the latest Airport software on your machine

I had a similar problem in a wired office. I was working there as a visiting consultant and I was the only Mac. Despite the fact I had chosend DHCP in my network settings - which worked everywhere else - the network would not assign numbers to me. I ended up having to set my IP number manually every time. If a clash arose, I simply changed the number by one in either direction. The network manager was stumped by it but didn't want to spend too much time on the problem as I was only supposed to be there for a few days, which is fair enough.
