    hi there,

I am looking at buying one of these bikes second hand at the moment. I was speaking to a guy this evening and he has one he is selling. he says the bike is in good nick and not couriered but the only problem is from time to time its hard to get the bike in to neutral. could this be something serious?

any advice greatly appreciated as Im not very technical when it comes to bikes

How long on average does it take to get into neutral?
Is there any problems geting into other gears?
Is the chain well oiled and properly adjusted?

if this is your first bike, buy from a dealer, not a private seller who could be a shyster out for an easy few quid by selling on a lemon to some unsuspecting buyer.

problems getting into neutral means that there might be bent clutch plates,
which means the bikes been used a lot(courier),
nearly every courier ive seen drives either a honda bros or a gn 125 and personnaly i can stand the damn things but like rymus said,go to a dealer not to some shyster

Reality check - most dealers are shysters.

Whether private or dealer, bring someone to look at it who knows what they are looking at.

Just what I was going to say. Regardless of whether you are buying a bike, car, bus, tractor or whatever, bring someone who knows what they are looking at with you. It may cost you €50 but it is a good investment.
I recently was looking at an old car (on sale for €6k) and between myself and the mechanic we spotted about 7 or 8 grands worth of repairs to a visually perfect car!

good point.. but a dealer isnt likely to pack his bags and skip town overnight. At least if a shop bought bike goes wonky, you can simply bring it back and proceed to bawl at whoever you bought it from.

whats the deal with private sales nowadays? How long after the sale does the seller remain liable for any problems there were at the time of sale? Or am I just talking ****?

I presume it depend on the warranty offered by the shop - many (2nd hand car) warranties are only for engine and gearbox.
Private sales are AFAIK based on the buyer beware premise.
There is a similar discussion going on in the thread Looking for advice?

There are many many dealers who will either blank you, fob you off, get aggressive, or the worst one of all, which is what most of them do, take the bike in, say they did work on it, and give it back in the same state they got it. Or even more frustrating, tell you there is nothing wrong with it, and keep fobbing you off. They know that 98% of people don't have the confidence to keep at them, so they get away with it.

rymus, a private seller doesn't have any responsibility once the ownership is transferred - ie as soon as the money is handed over. Dealers have certain responsibilities but will try to charge somehow for warranties.

A GN125 is an under-powered, asthmatic, 1980's motor bike and should be treated as such but like some posters have said - bring a mechanic or biker mate and make sure that the thing is sound before handing over any cash.

Difficult neutral could be anything from a stretched/poorly adjusted clutch cable or worn clutch or wrong gearbox oil or high mileage or just down the GN125's being crap. I've owned much worse but you should set your sights a little higher....

Are you sure it's not just a loose chain zipline?

I have the same problem with my NSR 125.
It's not a major problem at the moment, have to get other things bought first, like a sturdy flashy helmet.

BTW, there is a motorbikes forum.
