    Hi
im toying with the idea of developing a web site which will prompt the user to enter on the front page. On clicking the link the site will be opened in full screen mode (there will obviously be a close/exit button) - could be a cool solution !

What do you guys think of such a solution?

while it would look neat, I find websites that take control of my windows like that to be annoying. I set the window to be a certain size because I want it like that. Then when a site decides that it wants to resize everything I get well cheesed off and just end up putting it back the way it was, or else just closing it! What features are you including that require a full screen?

Seen it before and it is bloody annoying.

What if I want to check how my download of the latest jenna jameson video is going while browsing your site.

Less computer literate users don't know about alt+tab and stuff like that.

true ... but less not everyone is into jenna!! :D

nothing major.... just wanted something different.
it would make it alot neater without all those annoying buttons at the top!!! robbing so much of my screen space!

Don't even consider it. If I want to browse at full screen (which I never do) I just hit F11. The last thing that I, or most of the web browsing world want is more dubiuous javascript based browser hijacking. Leave that as the realm of the dodgy porn/warez sites.

ah, but it ain't your screeen space, it's the user's screen space!
    ;)

It's best just to design for the most common type of usuage, i.e. a maximized window at 1024 X 768 or there abouts

Sites that attempt to load full screen are a PITA. No thank you.

That's one terrible idea, most users put the toolbars there for a reason, to remove them just makes things less usable and it'd be likely that you'd loose visitors.
Gotta rank up there with the use of popups, but don't get me started on them :)

What is wrong with your site that using a normal window won't work out?

On another point which I didn't mention above, you're saying that you're going to open a new window. In my view it's best to only use '_blank' if the link leaves your site, if the link opens a dialog that works well as an extra window, or the link allows the user to knowlingly open a self contained application/feature

just to weigh in with the rest of the lads...opening a full screen on a user is a no-no.

It's so annoying, its like when you put one of those promo cd's like a multimedia audio cd into your computer...the cd spins up and pow your screen goes black and u cant see ur other apps.

The only exception i see to this is launching a full screen web based computer game, even then the user must be told.

evil, evil, evil, annoying, bloody irritating

if you cant do what you want in the space available, why bother pissing other people off and taking over their screen?
