I am looking at getting broadband from IOL. I have dial-up at the mo. IOL charge €190 for installing the modem, its €90 if you do it yourself. What exactly is involved it setting it up. I have installed my own dial-up, video cards, soundcards, cpu's ect, ect. However I have no experience with broadband/cable modems.

One other question, is it best to get the modem IOL provide or would it be better/cheaper to buy one myself. If so what is a good model.

Not sure bout IOL but with Eircom Broadband one simply plugs a splitter/microfilter in the wall socket, runs ordinary telephone cable to the modem (or router, rather). You then run the installation CD and connect the router to your computer via USB when the software prompts you to. Thats' it. The software does all the config for you.

And after having broadband for three weeks, I can safely say I'm not going back to dial-up. Ever...

One thing to note - you can only avail of the current offer of 3 months broadband for free if you opt for the self-install option, which really isn't a problem. The modem supplied by IOL should be pre-configured for their network and it should be simply a case of plugging it in to your phone line and computer and then adding splitters to other phone sockets in the house (I think two are supplied)

There are 3 splitters in the box with the modem IOL give you
Its as easy as pie to set up
    First plug in the modem
plug the phone line into it and wait for the yellow dsl light to come on.

Type in the web address for the modem 192.168.1.1 and just click on the install wizard icon which will lead you through putting in your user name and password etc etc

The instruction booklet guides you through step by step anyway and couldnt be easier.

you can do either but imho take their zycell usb modem as at least if you have problems they support it on their lo call number.
They cant help you much if you have a different modem.

From previous experience, go for the full tech install ONLY if your circumstances differ from a normal domestic setup. Otherwise, go for the self install.

For instance, if this was in an office in a town or city, and the phone points are in a central place many many metres away from the PC, then go for a tech install.

But if you are a home user, as the lads above have said, self install is the way to go... :)
