I'm in the market for getting a 5.1 speaker set up. Nothing too fancy, but nice enough. I was just wondering though, will I need something like an audigy card? My motherboard's a VIA K8T800, which supports 7.1 sound, but would I be best going for a seperate sound card? Any info is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Built in sound cards are fine for 5.1 main thing is a decent set of speakers i would recomned the Z680s http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007AKDP/103-8875222-0407037?v=glance

No point getting cheap crap set of speakers , wont be worth it in the end.

i got some 5.1 Trust speakers....not the best of names but cost me £80 and i swear..with all the dials up on the amp i cant get past about..25%..the floor starts shaking and the floor and everything..and they still sound great :D

my old motherboard didnt support onboard 5.1 so i got a cheap £10 soundblaster card that did support them, used that and i had excellent quality, now thats moved on im using the 7.1 onboard in my new msi board...sounds pretty much the same still pretty damn good , an audigy would be better though, im tempted to get one myself i miss the little extras like enhancing the sound to rock/metal ;)

but still onboards pretty respectable ..if anything i cant get my speakers past about 19% now..it seems to have increase the volume

The quality of the output from the PC wont be so amazing that it will matter what speakers you have. Iv Creative 7.1 speakers and their DTS/Dolby decoder. Does a great job with my DVD Player, PS2, MP3 player and laptop. Teh 7.1 is great because it upmixes from 5.1 and 6.1 to 7.1 so you get sound from all speakers either way. Check what outputs you have from the PC versus what inputs you get on the speakers. If you have a console you should consider a setup that would integrate with that.

you can use your pc speakers for your console?...is that without unplugging them, do you have some sort of..port that they can all use or something

sorry i dont get this but ive got 2 consoles sat here..and if i can use my 5.1 speakers for them..without too much cost that would be pretty damn nice..i had no idea i only bought em coz ive got music on from the minute i turn my pc on till it goes off..if ever ;)

The decoder (the equivlent of the PC's sound card) has 7 inputs (4 digital and 3 analog) and outputs to the speakers

So you need inputs into you system to hook in the console basicly.

Well at my pc has the standard blue, green and red/pink sound connectors. Which I'm assuming are analogue right? Is there any advantage to digital? I'm going to go for the z680's (thanks KdjaC), so will those inputs be alright? Also if I was to get a seperate sound card, could someone recommend me a decent but somewhat cheap one? This is my first trip into the realms of sound so forgive me!
    Thanks

Due to the way the DSPs work on the Mobos and cards ,theres really no need to get a new soundcard. the built one is fine , unless you work for Creative and have super sonic hearing and can tell the difference between an Audigy and CMI 8738 built in jobbie.

It really is the speakers that make the difference and those z680s are class, Pc World have them on special atm before you buy check their price may be cheaper than online.
