they don't straight out of the box but i think there is a way around it someone else may know how.

Yes it will. Apple give you a choice of buying either a Windows FAT 32 formatted Ipod or a Mac formatted Ipod.

File transfer times will be a lot slower with USB 1.1 than with USB 2 or Firewire. As far as I know an USB cable doesn't come as standard with the Ipod so you will have to order one seperately.

iTunes will not work with Win98 but you can use third party programs to transfer your songs to the iPod.

I think the 4G ipods come with a usb cable.

Buy the windows version, It will work slowly on USB 1 and you can add a USB 2 card to your PC if you want to get fast transfers.

Does the 3G iPod have a USB cable? If not do you have to order it from apple because it's got an iPod specific head at one end?

The 3G iPods have a USB cable and they are iPod specific but do not need to be ordered straight from apple. Any shop that stocks iPods should have one or be able to order one for you.

Grand. Believe it or not I have a 3G iPod but having never set it up for USB I've no idea if I've a cable lying around or not! I now want to use USB (1.1 I'm afraid!) and don't want to order a cable if I got one in the box last year.

    Thanks.

Edit: Looks like your right - according the amazon and ipodlounge the USB2 cable is new and the 3Gs mention nothing of USB. Off I go to order one then I guess...

USB and Firewire cables come as standard on the current iPods (4G).

If i were you id pick up a USB2 card and get win 2k, it will save you alot of grief. My GF tried to set up her iPod via a USB 1.1 port and it didn't work out too well.

The new iPods dont distinguish between Mac and PC. They are all Mac out of the box and part of the setup process reformats it to PC (FAT32).

Thanks Rew but I don't have space for a USB2 card otherwise I'd def. have one. Laptop already has a wireless card and I reckon that should get preference.

If its a PCMCIA card you can just put it in when you need it, your hardly going to need wireless and transfers to your iPod at the same time ;)

You should have 2 PCMCIA slots anyway

if itunes doesn't work, the use ephpod instead

    www.ephpod.com

I know about hot swapping but I'm not convinced it's that painless...I'm probably gonna get one soon from Elara to give it a go but right now the same cable will let me update the iPod (still has the same songs on it from 6 months ago!)...

No only 1 slot on this presario. Pretty sure it's cos I've a floppy drive built in.

I bought a 4th gen iPod last week and have had no problem running it on my ancient PIII450 (USB1.1). I do have Windows 2000 running though.

Sorry but why does USB1 work better with 2000 than XP? Or is that what your saying?

I have both the iTunes alternatives. Ephpod didn't really impress but maybe it's been updated.

Proper USB support in windows didnt start till Windows ME so Windows 98 has to be patched to support USB and then any USB devices require a driver. Be sure there is a 98 driver for the iPod.

apple fix their prices in countries so in ireland they are all the same price give or take a fiver.

the only place you'll find one cheap is in america but you can't buy it off their apple U.S. store you'd have to get a mate or yourself in america to get one on the cheap

I bought my 3G one over a year ago now in Canada and there was a serious price difference back then...ie I wouldn't dream of buying it in the apple store :)

Rew: I don't see what '98 has to do with 2000 vs. XP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

Re-read your post from earlier. I was talking about 98 being **** for USB. USB support on 2k and XP is basicly the same.

I dont think you will find much variation in price (but maybe Im wrong there!) I think Apple keep a pretty tight rein on the price AFAIK even people who work in places that sell ipods get very little discount on them.

Amazon in the UK have a basic price of €308 but they will add on some postage and a extra bit of VAT which will probably take you pretty close to the Apple stores price of 339 with free shipping and engraving.

Some of the O2 super stores Heny St and Grafton St have had the new models in you could also try Spectra in Grafton St.

Some of those stores might have the previous series model on stock and you might negotiate a discount on that. Most shops go near enough to the Apple Store price usually.

Dixon's seem to be stocking them now (ugh I hate Dixons!) but they had a sign up today saying all models were out of stock) At the moment I think its easier to get the ipod than the ipod mini so go luck with your search.
