Hi all. I'm looking for a good camera with a nice all round picture. Its for a birthday present for someone who wants to get into wildlife photography seriously (my daughter actually) and I want to get it in Ireland. I saw someone using a Nikon recently on a tv documentary but he then put the pictures onto his laptop without having them scanned or anything.. Is it possible to buy a camera like this in Digital format? I thought all digital camera's were like the little shiney things that you see in PC World and the likes..?!

    Hi

All digital cameras will connect directly to a pc/laptop so you can tranfer your photos and work on them .

Which camera to buy depends on how much you want to spend and what features you want. I'm no expert on the technical side of things and what you would need for nature photography maybe someone else would advise .

I purchased my digital camera online at http://www.pixmania.com and saved a couple of hundred euro on shop prices here. A few of my friends have purchased from them too on my recomendation and were more than happy too.

Just how serious is she ?
"Serious" wildlife photographers spend thousands of euro on their kit. Just as important (actually probably more important) is the type of lens you get. You'd want to be getting one at least around the 300mm range.

I think we would need to have a better idea of the budget you are working on to advise further..

Something like a D300 with a semi-decent telephoto lens will easily set you back over 2000 euro i'd say. And this would be bottom of the range for most dedicated nature photographers. And purchasing in ireland is probably going to add few hundred quid onto the price.

You should pop into the camer exchange and the other one in Dublin (Bermigham cameras?) and see what second had lenses they have - a good lens is going to be needed for wildlife as the animals don't let you get too close...however I'd also suggest taking awander round Dublin zoo with a decent SLR as many of the enclsures have no glass/fence to get in your way...especially the Island that the chimps are on.

How much do you want to spend?

If it's just under €150 and your wee treasure want to take photos of wild life, say birds and stuff, then digital binoculars might the fun thing to get?

As the others have said, it's hard to give advice without knowing what you're willing to spend and how serious your daughter is about wildlife photography.

Perhaps a digital SLR + quality lenses would be overkill at this stage. A good quality ultra zoom digi cam with some manual controls might be more appropriate.

If so, I'd recommend a Panasonic FZ10, FZ15 or FZ20. These cameras have 12x optical zoom (36-432mm equivalent in the case of the FZ20) with the option of an additional tele conversion lens which brings the max zoom up to 18x (648 mm equivalent) The cameras have an excellent Leica lens which has a max aperture of f2.8 throughout the zoom range.

I'm not sure about prices but I'd estimate you'd pay around 500-700 euros for one of these cameras. Some info here:
