Phone line & 2nd Sky box

    Hi,
I've had a Sky box for several years, never had a permanent connection to the phone line, just temporarily plugged in a phone cable if I ever wanted any PPV items. Now I want to install a 2nd Sky box in another room but the installer refuses to do so unless there is a permanent connect to the phone line. This is inconvenient as the phone socket is on the other side of the house and would necessitate running a cable through 3 rooms. I know the box will work without a permanent connection but the problem is that Sky insist on it (presumably in the hope that I'll buy more PPV programs?).

When they say 'permanent' do they mean actually hard wired into the socket or simply a fixed cable plugged into the socket?

So what are my choices? Look for an installer that isn't so fussy? Put in a second phone socket?

Is it true that Sky periodically check that the box is connected to a phone line?

    Cheers,
    BOF

They do check ok. Its just to make sure both digi boxes are in the same house and useing the same phone number.

You should be able to get away with stringing a length of phone cable to both boxes and putting a splitter into the phone socket. Just tell the installer you've only just run the cable and are going to tidy it up/nail to skirting boards/bury under carpet/whatever that afternoon.

Permanent doesn't have to mean that it's there already. Alternatively you can get phone socket extensions which do the job without the mess of running cables - see http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page22.htm#sv1500. Not sure how good they work but it's not as if they'd be used often.

With a mirror subscription you need a permanent phone connection to both boxes otherwise Sky will write to you threatening to charge you full price for the 2nd connection.
