Ok, my friend and I are interested in doing a martial art. Preferably Kickboxing, could someone give me an idea of what would be involved. We're both 15 and complete beginners.

Btw, anyone know contact info for Black Dragon Kickboxing in Galway?

Fanatic4life, are you and your pal both male or female?

Am from Tipp so obviously can't give you advice on clubs in Galway.

I woud say give Tae kwon Do are try. very good for fitness, confidence, and self discipline, as well as simply just a self defence. Like I said on a previous thread it focuses on punches and kicks, with a strong emphasis on stretching techniques, and warm up and cool down exercises.

At 15 ye are at the perfect age to start a martial art. Ye are old enough to accept and understand the try meaning of an art, and will most likely not abuse it. Ye also at an age where ye are growing and developing. TKD or any martial art will help in this physical development process.

Good luck with the training regadless of what martial art foem ye choose.

We're both female to answer your q, memphis. Tae Kwon Do? Hmmm, hadn't thought of that. I'll look into it. It sounds like the kinda thing we want.

We aren't really looking for submission wrestling, although I am kinda interested in it. I might email them, thanks for the link.

Thanks for the addy, I'll get in touch with him.

Thanks for all the help! We really appreciate it.

While Colm is hot, he doesn't train with PBS. What they lack in looks they more than make up for in eagerness.

you should give kenpo karate a shot. everyoen of course will tell you to try theirs but i think kenpo isa good starting point. im started with kenpo at fifteen and found it easy to get in to(id done absolutely no other martial art) and enjoyable. it keeps you very fit and you do an equal amount of punching and kicking which i dont think you will find in kickboxing.
kickboxing is an excellent martial art for building up you kicks but ive found it to be lacking in the punch front and it can be quite heavy contact.

I do not find that It focuses on punches really at all. I mean when i did it i found that it really only worked your legs the only moves you learned to do with your hands were quick jabs(bear in mind i did only do it for bout 5/6 months). I mean when it comes to kicking its an excellent martial art but i find it really lacks on the punching front. I do agree with you on the whole fitness aspect though as it does keep you very fit and keeps your leg muscles well built up.

With kickboxing it depends on the kickboxing that you do i mean the "competition" style one will obviously be alot less contact and is designed for competitions. I have never done kickboxing before but id say that it keeps you quite fit the competition style seems to only really focus on kicking again (thats from what ive seen in competitions). The other version from what i can tell is just like boxing only you can kick aswell id say now that this will have quite heavy contact in it and probably wouldnt be the best martial arts to start off with in my opinion. A lovely style that ive seen is a style used by a club called "The Black Panthers" they are a dublin club and their master teaches kick boxing but is also a Kenpo black belt. Im afraid to say i cannot remember his name but he really cleared house to the fight night that i went to.

If you like wresling but dont want it to be very rough i suggest giving judo a try. I've done it for 7 years aswell as doing kenpo (2 years of kenpo) and the combination of both is quite a nice mixture as one is grapling and one is punching and kicking.

depends if you do WTF or ITF Taekwondo, although the patterns have ample punches, knifehand strikes, etc for both styles. It's the sparring where the most difference between the 2 styles are.

Fair enough as i said i didnt do Taekwondo for that long but just from the experience of watching Taekwondo people spar to me it seems like it is all kicking and very little hand work. I mean in competitions where there are multiple martial arts fighting against each other the Taekwondo fighters tend really to only kick.
By the way what is the difference between Wtf and Itf Taekwondo?

WTF is the Olympic style of TKD. The main differences between them and the ITF are in which sets of patterns they do, and in the sparring regulations. There's lots of different ones, correct me if I'm wrong but I think WTF do the Taegeuk 1-8/Koryo set, while the ITF does the Ch'ung-Han set of patterns (Chon-Ji, Dan-Gun etc.)
In the sparring, WTF competitors wear a headguard, body armour, gumshield and cup and the sparring is full contact. ITF competitors wear headguard, hand pads, foot pads, gumshield and cup and the sparring is semi-contact. Not that you'd think it...
    *recalls Intervarsities bruising...*
The kicks are very prominent in both styles, but especially in WTF because you aren't allowed to score a point with a punch to the head, only with a kick.
As you've probably gathered, I likes meh TKD...

the above is spot on :)

one big thing ITF has going for it, is the longest pattern in martial arts history in Duke Am, 95 combined movements, and if you can do the pattern good, it looks even better as a spectator!
