There's a new Resi movie coming out? I bought the old one (with Mila whatsherface) on DVD and was pleasantly surprised. It was Bmovietastic.

IE pretty good if you didnt expect much to begin with. I certainly have worse DVD's ;-)

the last resi movie was crap tbh (almost hammier than the games :D )

silent hill is the only game to film transition i have hope for

The only problem with the first Res Evil film was that the ending felt like the begining of the actual film....so she gets out of prison gets a shotgun and then.....the film ends  OK a bit abrupt but apart from that the film was watchable not great but not horrid either.

John Woo has the rights to a few games, including metroid prime. i can't see how that would work as a movie to be honest, but i guess time will tell.

tman, yes i agree i'd love to see silent hill on dvd, it's a good game but i'd hope that they don't spoil it by putting in a **** plot line to it.
also another game i wouldn't mind seeing as a film would be alone in the dark ;)

secret squirrel, yep there's another resi film coming out, resident evil: apocolyps (spelling  )

Aliens -v- Predator was* good, tho that was a movie based on the concept of the game, rather on the actual happening of the movie.

    *based totall on the "trailer"

Just to be picky - I think the AvP Game(s) and film are both based on the comic books.....

Showing my age now but I would have liked to see a movie based on Elite (remember the novella that came with it?) or Privateer 2 (Clive Owen could reprise his role. mmm Dani Behr-though I imagine she's pretty rough nowadays)

Resi movie is my contender for best Game movie ever tbh. Although Im still waiting for that rainy day where I sit down and watch Wing Commander ;)

Best game to movie is street fighter 2 the animated movie.

I'm looking forward to the Tekken game, names like Jet Li and Jackie chan have been thrown around. Also Soul Calibur.

Movie's based on game tend to turn out really poor with just the original Mortal Kombat being the best of a very bad lot.

    The other runner........

Mortal Kombat II oh mama this is a stinker.

Super Mario was bad. Actually this movie would need to be 1000 times better to even be considered bad.

Wing Commander was terrible with bad acting, stupid story that bore little in common with the game and pretty crap effects.

Street Fighter was just muck. Even worse than Super Mario!

Tekken the movie (Animated) had a woeful plot but this could be due to the dubbing into english.

Resident Evil 1 was ok as in a semi decent action movie based roughly on a game concept.

Resident Evil 2 is painful to watch. Bad movie almost up there with Street Fighter.

Film studios need to stop blowing cool game licenses on crap directors and bad scripts. Hopefully the Doom movie might be done well.

i quite like the Resident Evil film, probably because RE2 was one of the first games i got for my PS1 all those years ago, and had be on the edge of my seat.

There was a game i used to play a few years ago called 'Rebel Assault', and I think they've made it into a fairly decent movie called 'Store Wars' or 'Star Warriors'. Something about a 'Force' and the 'Empire'!?!

I enjoyed Resident Evil in a dumb action movie way. It's probably the best movie-game adaptation that I've seen.

I was looking forward to RE2 but Venom - who I assume is back from the US where he saw it - has put me off a little. Is it really that poor relative to the first?

John Woo should be shot. I hope to god he never gets his grubby mits into Metroid.

As others have mentioned, Street Fighter - The Animated Movie is the only decent game-to-movie transition that works without people being required to either "forget" certain details from the original game or, in fact, totally ignore everything related to the game other than its existence.

Mortal Kombat - could and should have been good, but the use of existing characters, cheesy central storyline, and crap ending put paid to that. Johnny Cage wasn't enough of an arrogant git, Sonya Blade was quite evidently chosen for the way her chest looked in her fighting outfit, Rayden was cast well but then given absolutely nothing to do, and the pairing of Sub Zero and Scorpion made absolutely *no* sense going by the original storyline.

Mortal Kombat 2 - the less said the better. Crappy storyline, crappy acting, crappy settings, crappy fight scenes.

Street Fighter Live Action - Van Damme and Kylie Minogue in the same movie? And it's not got some sort of extended porn sequence to maintain our interest? Em, no thank you. Atrocious on all counts.

Super Mario - entertainingly bad, although to see any real link between this and the games themselves, you'd probably need to be on some sort of hallucinogen.

Final Fantasy - as a movie, this works ok. Story is a bit cheesy though. Mind you, I was never an FF fan, so I have no idea if it has anything to do with the games.

Double Dragon - based on the arcade fighting game that came out in the late 90's, this was filmed on the same island as Mortal Kombat and was similar. Cheesy storyline, but enjoyable in a "take your brain out and ignore any details from the game".

Resident Evil - meh. If I remove my brain totally, I can enjoy this. But then again, I could probably enjoy watching static on my tv for hours on end if I did that...

Can't remember any others offhand (although I do remember the CGI MK short film which was also crap, some sort of cartoon based on it, an MK live action tv series - also crap, and a cartoon based on yet another version of Double Dragon which spawned a videogame). Rumours are doing the rounds about adaptations of Bloodrayne, House Of The dead, and Alone In The Dark.

Metroid Prime - the movie? Looks like I may have to start saving up and hire that hitman to take out John Woo, before he defacates all over one of my favourite game franchises.

Well I watched it in Ireland in the comfort of my own home if you know what I mean :) But the quality was DVD perfect so my very low opinion of the film is not based on poor quality.

While the first movie is ok as an action movie and does take on some elements of the game mythos the sequal is just pure dross. Its easly one of the worst action movies Iv ever seen and is really painful to watch due to the piss poor editing job that was done to it. Take out all the over used Matrix style effects and get a proper editor in and the movie could have been good as the acting and plot are pretty ok apart from the very left open for a sequal type ending that really should of ended 10 minutes before it does.

As I'm sure the name suggests, I'm a huge Resident Evil fan. There are not adequate words in the English language to cover how much I hated the Resident Evil film. If ever a game cried out for a faithful movie adaptation it was Resident Evil. It's already a naturally cinematic game anyway. All they had to do was capture a smidgen of the tension...that horrible feeling of dread. Nope. Kung Fu fighting with dobermans. Argh. It was scifi/ action, not horror. If it's own characters were in any way decent, I could have forgiven them making up their own, but the only vaguley interesting person in it was One... Milla Jovovich, much as I actually quite like her... her character was a superhero. A superhero in Resident Evil. Argh.

At least they've put Jill in the sequel, though from what I hear, I might have to change my username to avoid the shame of association...

Silent Hill... I'm looking forward to. If it's a fraction of what the game is, it'll blow all the competition out of the water. I'm concerned it might lose something along with the interactivity though...

Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within was pretty good, but I was expecting more, seeing as the storylines in the games tend to be alot better. I loved the alien designs in it, as they actually looked very alien looking. Not just human looking but with a funny shaped head.

There is a Japanese horror film called St. John's Wort which is based on a SNES survival horror game. It's not too bad except for the last 5 seconds or so of the film which are really dumb.

And there is a Hong Kong film called Bio-zombies which is sort of a parody of Resident Evil (or Bio-Hazard as it's called in Japan, I believe).

And lets not forget Tron, although I think the film came before the game. But it is still a a great video game based film.

I'm looking forward to a Pac-man movie, Brad Pitt would be great in the lead role, and Gary Oldman could play the pink ghost.

The next RE film looks like it'll be more like the games. I really disliked the first RE film, I thought it was very disappointing.

Bio Zombie isn't really a parody of RE. The only thing it really has in common with it is zombies.

Ah, there was more to it than that. There was even the scene that that showed each of the characters as if they were on the selection screen of a video game, each with their own weapon. Which is very similar to the extra survival modes that are unlocked when you complete a resident evil game.

Including a homage or two doesn't make it a RE film :p

Any idea what the game name is (if it's not the same)? And whether the game was any good?

Great game-based film, yes. But I think the film was first, so it doesn't really count.

Funny thing, but while Googling to see if there were any movies I'd forgotten about, I found a spoof (or at least I hope it was a spoof  ) article about how some studio was actively developing a "hi-octane" movie adaptation of Pong. Enough said. Now, if they'd chosen Arkanoid I'd be singing a different tune... ;)

I think it is the same name, but just in Japanese. It was never released outside of Japan. Out of curiosity after watching the film I tracked down a copy of the ROM. It's seems to be a pretty poor game, although the film seems to follow it's storyline fairly well, but it's hard to tell as I can't read Japanese. It's barely a game at all though, more like a 'choose your own adventure' book. It has lots of graphics a text boxes keep appearing again and again untill eventually you are given a choice of 2 or 3 things to do, then it's reading text and looking at graphics for another 10 minutes or so.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those are no rumours.

Director Uwe Boll has already done House Of The Dead, is about to unleash Alone In The Dark upon us, has started filming Bloodrayne, and after that is planning to dive straight into Farcry.

Anyone who's seen The House Of The Dead can testify that this is not a good thing that Uwe Boll is scouring for Game adaptation, as THOTD is possibly one of the worst films in existance. It's probably one of the most horrible films you could ever and some parts are so unintentionally funny you wonder just how drugged up the cast was.

I'm probably going to watch Alone In The Dark out of sheer morbid curiosity though.

Hmmm. I seem to have had a total brainfart about House of the dead, because I now remember an article linked to from the horror board a while ago, in which Boll basically tried to claim that HOTD was actually *not* crap, contrary to the allegations of everyone who watched it. (Not seen it, not going to. I can't imagine there being anything I'd like in it, and I have neither the time nor inclination to watch something universally hailed as being crap.)

I agree with you about Alone in the dark tho. There's enough possibility of it being a good movie (even in the hands of Uwe Boll - *shudder*) that I'll take a risk and hope for the best. It might at least have some redeeming parts...

yeah that e-mail/statement from Uwe Boll was a riot. He went crazy. "My film is not awful you pigfunckers! You suck!" was the gist of it.

I'm not holding out much hope for anything he's doing to be halfway decent. He's a nutjob.

Cameron Diaz was actually cast in the role, but she broke her hand in training.

but then she went on to make the Mask, so i bet she's happy she busted her arm

i'd like to see a legacy of kain movie actually. and a metal gear solid one... though that could absolutely ruin the games if done wrong.

I liked Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and the first Mortal Kombat was alright.
Alone in the dark could be interesting. There sure is plenty of scope for adaptations from games.

yea, would be well cool, I just want to see asp's and vipers in all their glory.
Id actually love to see a good film of the ultima sagas, or even better, a series. Anyway, decent Sci Fi and Fantasy would be welcome compared to some of the crap weve been getting recently.
