Problem playing DVDs

I have a 3.5 year old HP PC that was fairly high end at the time - 1GHz, 512Mb RAM, 2x30Gb, DVD ROM, + separate CD RW. It came with Win 98, but I upgraded to XP about 6 months ago. The DVD had been giving trouble for some time (forget the precise error, but basically refused to play DVDs). I half thought that upgrading to XP might resolve the issue, but no such luck.

I bought a DVD-RAM, +-R a few weeks ago (LG electronics) and replaced the DVD drive with that. Now I can play some DVDs, but not all. I've tried using PowerDVD and DVDExpress, but the result is the same in both cases - I get audio but a black screen. Using DVDShrink, I can rip a DVD ok and see the preview as the ripping analysis is in progress.

There were some problems with the drive letters being reordered when I pulled out the DVD ROM and replaced with the new drive, but I think I've gotten beyond that now.

Does anybody have any suggestions what I can try next?

I had a similar problem recently where the BTC DVD+-R gave me the same issue. It did work but then went west.

The solution I found was to upgrade the firmware. You don't mention the exact model you have but firmware for most manufacturers and models can be found here.

Be sure to download the correct firmware for the model you have.

Be careful though and follow the instructions carefully as if the firmware upgrade goes wrong you will end up with a coffe holder.

Have you got Alcohol 120% installed? - That caused probs with my old LG drive.
I wouldn't recommend messing around with the firmware until you see if the drive works on another computer.

If the drive worked on the other computer, I'd burn all my needed files onto a few CD/DVDs (Music etc.) Then reformat my HD and fresh install windows.

If it ****ed up on another machine, I'd try the firmware flash.
