After numerous complaints and a few banning do you think karma should be gotten rid of once more ?

I think users should be able to switch theirs off if that's possible.

Am curious to hear what Paddy20 thinks about this though, his decision on this matter could sway my stance with respect to my views on this.

I think it'd be handy if it could be kept just for the for-sale boards, with it being disabled anywhere else. Don't give people the option to disable it either, which would give people who recieve bad rep an easy way out.

OK, I feel strongly about reputation, but then aguin either way I'll be happy.

I'd be happy because reputation does give the oppurtunity to say how they feel about certain users, and if a person is constantly abusing a certain or a group of users, then the negative karma can get the admins/moderators attention and therefore that user will be banned!

however, we do have a good few downsides to this. I do not think a person should be given negative karma for, perhaps, quite stupid comments(e.g. Suggesting a new fourm that may already exsist, commenting on a certain item negatively/postively with big opposition etc.) , it's embarrassing for users to have red dots on their username display and, of course, I don't think people really care that a person has good/bad karma at the end of the day, as we do not earn anything but the titles themselves.

All in all, if it's disabled, I'd be happy, but if the opposite happens, it'll be ok, but we do have all those negative things to think about as well.

As it is, i think its bollocks. two suggestions i have is 1)have it only for for sale, and there has to be a reason given.

secondly would be just leave it for the mods to keep track of users?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

Look at me.. do you think I care about negative rep or what they are saying? :p

Treat it like a game, you get more points that way.

Free greenies for those who vote NO. Red points for those who vote YES. :D

I think it's funny. Taking it seriously is silly. Like Hobbes says, it a game.

I would not like to see it banned but hey, if that's what people want.

I think paddy20 would be gutted if it was dusable though. Seriously folks, think of the paddy20.

I've recieved four negative comments on this thread.
Comments include "Karma atackkkkkkkk" "llama" "NOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo" and "You suck".
I think if there was a way to implement that it showed the user who sent it would be better. Or some other way to stop it being abused.

I'm still at a loss as by what the user who said llama meant by it.

Yep I believe it should be turned off, I used it for a while but in the end people just messed about and gave ‘bad’ karma when they could and gave ‘good’ when they had to, even if posts didn’t deserve it so I turned it off in the end..

Yea I get a feeling hundred people will gave me so much bad karma just for saying that now… oh well

    Peace

While in principle the karma system is a good idea, and I frequent one forum in particular where a recently introduced similar system has helped root out a lot of bad apples and decreased the amount of idiotic messing around that went on there, personally, I think that the system here needs to be refined as opposed to disabled. As it is, I think the community at large is just too immature to use it in its present form. I present one comment I got today for pointing out a crosspost as evidence; "Moany spa". Surely there would have been a more elequent way of voicing the disagreement...

Perhaps the ratings shouldn't be balanced soley on one user rating, but rather require a quorum of ratings and apply an average rating afterward this has been reached? Just my suggestion...

ROFL I got "you suck" and "Karma atackkkkkkkk". I also got 4 other nep rep points (one was stupid enough to show he was a moderator). Funny this is.. I still made more green dots then red dots.

I shared the love as well for those positive rep people.. everyone else I shall smite. :p

I think its grand. The only thing i would say is that they person giving rep should have to give their handle, or it should be part of the function that 'midget lord said: you suck' or whatever. otherwise you dont know who is giving you good or bad rep so you swoon or get revenge!

I really dont care .. BUT I DO wish that someone would give me some positive Karma .....

    Please

Yea I appear to have gotten three apples? :) Clearly there is another team at work. However their personal score isn't high enough to have any real effect.

Perhaps if posts were screened; you only get reputation points if your post gets more than vote.
ie: you make a bad post - more than one person votes you for negative rep points - you get negative rep points.

you make a good post - more than one person votes you for positive rep points - you get some positive rep points.

This would filter out the morons, and the "I've voted for you - will you vote for me" crowd.

    ...just an idea.

If you vote for someone, they can't vote for you for a few days and until they spread it around afaik.

I was talking about the losers who give you bad rep because they mightn't agree with a (good) point your making, as opposed to giving you bad rep for making a bad point.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 956 ✭✭✭midget lord

Have a look at this thread for example. I ask a question and i loose 3 rep points for it. Now if i had of known who gave me the bad rep i could take it up with them.

I got bad rep because someone didn't like a song I was listening to.

LOL - man thats a good one. I'm not too bothered - I was just providing a solution to that issue though.

    or get revenge!

I think that's the point about not having names, Karma isn't supposed to be about revenge. Having names would encourage taking "revenge", which messes with the Karma concept even more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

Lol got more apples and appleback (Which means positive rep?).

This is why Rep is a game.. I was 312 this morning. I am now at 357 despite getting numerous reds (apples) today. So giving negative rep to higher up reps is pointless.

This is why the system is pointless.. however I am enjoying the game. :)

I assume the apples comment is in relation to Doodle_sketches "Bad apples" comment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 321 ✭✭lisa.c

why not have it as a personal option .

people that dont want it can deactivate it while also giving up there option to give or take rep points

people that do want it can leave theirs activated and be able to give or take rep points.

i personally dont like it especially when i get bad reps but it is only fun.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 5,945 ✭✭✭BEAT

well, I am pretty indifferent to it. I like all the funneh comments I get..but I dont like when I get a red box with no comment. It is a game as Hobbes said, I like to be able to pass out good karma when I can.
If its here I will use it if it isnt then I will get over it ;)

Pity who ever was giving me my "apples back" (which I took as someone trying to be offensive, hence the comment) accidently took 9 points off me  :D Oh well...

Negative rep "You're only saying that cos of ur pos rep. It's not a game. It's stupid and annoying..", along with numerous and I mean numerous red apples.

One positive rep just wiped them all out. I am at 371 now (higher again then my last post) and I've been getting numerous negative rep points all afternoon.

Like I said it is a game. If you think it is annoying, just ignore the dots and collapse the rep drop down list.

You honestly think I look at peoples dots when I read their posts?

[edit] Hush Eamo :p Of course I don't.

Hmm I hate all these damn rep threads and believe posting in them is a sure fire way to get negative rep but since this may be one of my last posts on boards...

I like the idea but not the system. In politics while negative karma is given to those who post idiotically, negative karma is also being thrown around just because ppl disagree with a point, not the way its being made. Thats stupid imo, if you disagree with someones views you make a constructive post illustrating why you disagree not give karma with the comment "WRONG".

Lots of ppl have said shure whats it matter, tis all just a game. It is very embarrassing and demeaning for those with red dots beside their name. Some people surf boards because they dont get along well in Real Life TM. Those people are now going round with signs saying how unpopular they are. Look at me I have no friends ANYWHERE.

I also believe that there are some very imature ppl on boards. People are creating multiple accounts to give themselves positive karma and their enemies negative. There are ppl who give karma with a msg asking for the same in return.

I dont believe it is fair that a "popular" person's opinion is more important that a n00b. Why shouldnt a person with low karma be able to critisise another.

There are two trends which i see emerging on boards (although it may be that Im just noticing them for the first time).
People are becoming more agressive and offencive and Im not just talking about the anonymous comments. Everywhere ppl are flaming in what I think is an effort to gain popularity; its worse than school. Those who pick on the weak and unpopular rise to the top (though im not suggesting for a minute this is how those with mega rep have gotten it, I believe only certain ppl are doing this).

Conformity. Many users are toning down their opinions, moving away from radical or unpopular stances. Nobody want bad rep. They ave an opinion or a view but dont want to express it. Im not saying ppl are crying themselves to sleep but some ppl arn't "comfortable" anymore.

My suggestions if anyone is interested is to replace the comments box with a standardise list of reasons. eg
Positive: Funny, Origional, UnMke helpful, Misinformed, Style
Negative: Unfunny, Unorigional, Unhelpful, Misinformed, Style.
This way you get a reason, its not hurtful, and ppl cant sign it just so as to get positive rep in return.
Also everybody's opinion carries the same number of points. To avoid abuse from multiple accounts make it a requirment to have a certain number of posts.

I also think there is merit to the idea of a post receiving more than one coment before rep takes effect.

    Opinions?

to be honest, i think a lot of 'new' users may find that to be the case.
after all, if you have a system in place, people will look upon it as something to go by. so a negative, or low reputation, will mean your opinion is not worth squat.

i think some of the older heads, probably dont give a monkeys either way, and like myself, will tend to take the mick out of it. mostly cause we dont like change (someone moved your cheese recently?), but mostly because we have already been damned, and you dont need green or red dots to havea reputation.

FYI, beruthial isnt nice, and she doesnt deserve all those points. and hobbes is an alien. but shhhhhhh, tis all a consipiracy liek!
