I have a Maxtor and WD 120G disk at the moment and both are, and have been, working perfectly. I've not noticed much difference between them in terms of access times of noise. Both are 7200 RPM and on a UDMA133 connection.
It's really down to personal preference, maybe price but there isn't usually much between manufacturers.

I only have experience of WD, and my experience is good. It’s Virtually Noiseless and bullet proof reliability.

WD is the way to go.

    Good Luck.

i've heard a lot about these drives being one of the quietest

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=123995&cks=PRL

it's also cheaper than the two you posted.

The Seagate Barracuda is the quietest of all the mainstream HDD right now at 25dB I've had two and both are quiet and have caused no problems.

From benchmarks i've seen the Seagates are now one of the worst performing hd's. The samsungs are also quieter than them.

The best two to go for are western digital and samsung. The wd's perform slightly better but the samsungs are quieter.

Bought two Seagate Barracuda 200Gb drives last week and have been installing/formatting on em since and they're pretty quiet (note that I don't get pissed off with all that much noise so I may not be the ideal test case).

Yeah the seagates are quiet but they don't perform too good.

The samsungs perform a lot better and are quieter.

That's interesting. When in the market for a couple of 160GB SATA drives earlier this year, I did a good bit of research and found that

    WD: best performance, loudest
    Seagate barracuda: worst performance, quietest
Samsung spinpoint: good performance (almost as good as WD), quiet (almost as quiet as seagate)

I chose the Samsungs, have had them in RAID0 since. My experience is as above , so I'm very happy with them :)

Yeah that pretty much sums it up but a lot of reviews i've read said the samsung spinpoints were quieter than the seagates. They do seem to be the best all round drives.

why not get 2 drives and set a raid 0, much faster and less stress on the drives, i have 2x 36gig raptor drives on raid 0 and it runs very well, also have 2x 160 on raid 0 and 2x 200 on raid 0 on second controller, u will like the performance!

the new Hitachi's are the fastest 7200RPM drive around - even beats the 10,00RPM 36GB WD Raptor in a few benchmarks as well...
