    Ok i'm not going to lie about it. The reason I want to start a martial art is because I want to be confident as a person and safe in the knowledge that I could defend myself or others if it was required of me. Also and vain as it may sound I want to have a more impressive phsique, cause let's face it, chicks like that!!!

    So i'm starting college in about a week and a half and I hope to start one then. I'm about 5'9" with a fairly skinny build. I would normally only play soccer or tennis but I love the idea of a completely fresh start which this is for me in many ways.

    personally I'd say Judo because it's more hands on then most martial arts in that there are alot of actual competitions which give you reasonable experience of actual fighting and you can enter beginner competions very soon after you take it up.

    However check out the various martial arts clubs in your college on clubs day but don't just pick one there, alot of what you hear on clubs day is fancy sales talk, go to three or four different martial arts classes in your college and then pick one to run with from those.

    Breaking down a few of the more popular Martial arts.

    No before I do this I want to point out that I maybe wrong on some of this so others feel free to correct me.

    Tae kwon Do - Korean art, focuses on stretching, and kicks, along with punching, training can be tough, but its not so bad as a beginner. Great for fitness, and above all confidence. Stick at it and you could well have a black belt in 3-4 years with much self discipline. (I'm a yellow belt)

    Kick boxing/thai boxing - Thailand origan, haven't ever done it, but very physical, be prepared to get hit and hit hard. Great for fitness, and developing physical strength. develops confidence. lots of kicks, use of knees, hands and elbows.

    Judo - lots of grabbing and throwing, good for self defence fitness, and confidence.

    Karate - only did it for a very short period. very physical training, lots of shouts and that, found it kinda aggresive really (just my opinion) great for confidence, fitness, and the like. Again train hard and you could have a black belt in 4 years.

    Hope this helps, there are many more art forms out there. My advice would be to do a search on google, and see what yo can find, also try each of them out, and then you will find one that best suits you.

    I'd like to offer you a trial class at my club in South Dublin. You can check out what we do on our site, www.twokingsmma.net. Kev, who posts on here from time to time, started training with me a few months ago, so he could give you a good review of it from a beginners perspective. Or you could review my club for this forum.

    If you're starting in UCD you I coach the BJJ club. I'll be at the stand for pretty much the entire Sports Expo (Mon 20th-Thur 21st).

    I appreciate your honesty in your first post. The only way you can be confident in what you do is to constantly test it in training. Run a mile if you hear the expression "too deadly to practice".

    I assume then I was right in my idea of kickboxing then? Like I say I've never done it. I wold like to give it a try though.... believe me I do need to be hit and hit hard. lol.

    Being a yellow belt in TKD I don't get hit too often. Though having said that I did spar with my trainer (once) who is a 4th dan, and he did hit me, and hard!
