Hello, I know this sounds a bit stupid, but I recently installed XP on to my old computer, and when I did during setup it asked me to enter an admin passsword.

After it got set up I left it for ages, because I didnt need to use the old pc, but know I need it.

When I went to start it up the welcom screen comes up with the Admin Log in thing, and asks to put in the password.

I cant remember for the life of me what the hell it was.

Now ive no idea what to do, I cant get into XP.

    Any suggestions?

You might have better luck in the Windows forum but I'd suggest a re-install to reset the password. Failing that you could try googleing for XP Password crack or something similar to see if there's any other way in.

Course if it was as easy as a google search, run programme, crack password then that'd be worring...

reboot into safe mode , press F5 when pc is turning on ; or F8 then select safe mode.

u should be able to login to the admin a/c without auth.

to go control panel> users (afaik) and remove pass/change it,

i dont use windows anymore, this is from memory so i may be a bit diff.

    Hirens Boot CD,
this is a freeware 36 MB ISO Cd image, download it and create a bootable CD, one of the utilities contained on the disc is a XP password changer

<edit> Link removed as that cd contains pirated software, please don't post links to pirated software. </edit>

Or you could just reinstall XP,

The answer from mbroaders should work and if not then reinstall as you have not been able to implement these tools correctly and the next best thing then would be the easy one you do manage, being a reinstall.

do you know your USERNAME ?

if so then login as your usual username instead of administrator - you probablly gave yourself admin rights - in which case simply reset / change the admin pw in control panel -admin tools - computer management etc. etc.

there are utils out there to reset the admin PW

If you can't remember your username  (it happens a lot more than you'd think possible) then use a boot disk to look at the names of the folders in c:\documents and settings. LDIR (Odi's by Ortwin Glueck) will list long file names

if NTFS then you'll need NTFSDOS on the boot disk as well
