mpeg2 / avi converter

Can anyone suggest where I get a free mpeg2 & avi converter. I have Nero 5 but when I try to convert to dvd it tells me I need a mpeg 2 codec which is only available on there site (cost $20) or if you get nero 6 it is included. I have searched the web but the free versions only last for approx a minute. Any suggestions ??
