What's the quickest/easiest way to do this?

I'm going from Windows 98 to XP.

    Thanks.

If its a good bit of info, pop out the hard drive and put it in as a slave into the other machine......... then copy from H.D to H.D very fast.

Other than that, network (you will need a crossover cable, these are wired slightly different to ordinary patch cables but maplins etc should have em), CD/DVD burning mabye if those two dont suit.......

If you're going to do a network transfer, the best thing to do would be to install an FTP server (there are loads of them) on the old PC and use an FTP client (Filezilla, ...) to log in from the new PC and copy the files over.

As Loki says, simplest way is put the disk from one into the other. If you have network cards then a cross-over cable can connect the two together and you can copy the files across in Network neighbourhood or windows explorer or use the ftp method leroy mentions.
I'd go with swapping hard disks for simplicity.

HDD is the fastest way - file sharing tween 98/XP is a pain cos of firewalls different workgroup names and general changes in standards - have a troll through the forums.

Disconnect the data cable for the CD and put the HDD on to it.

If the data size is small USB key or external USB drive etc.

Thanks all. Data size will be small, as i said above I'm clearing out as we speak. CD transfer might be enough, if not I'll get a USB key.

Might have one here somewhere. How does the actual transfer happen? 'Found new hardware' sorta thing?

It is a SPECIAL cable with electronics in the middle - not a simple crossover cable.

    €25 look under network
