    Hi all,

Im moving into a house in a new estate in Waterford soon and
NTL told me that its gonna have MMDS only... No physical cable.

SO.. Ive an option. Sky digital has loads of channels.. and is a tad awkward to use... but no channel 4 or UTV so Im told, and they are the missus' favourite channels.

MMDS basic has everything I want, but.. seemingly theres no MTV with MMDS basic outside of Dublin.. again, ya gotta have MTV. MMDS digital has plenty of groovy channels but dosnt have MTV which I watch all the time.

Are there any other packages you could recommend or am I stuck with these options??

If you can get the Chorus MMDS digital package you get MTV, VH1 and the Box. Might be worth checking out if you want some tunes and UTV\Channel 4.

Yeah Chorus would do the trick but they dont do Waterford so Im told.

Are you sure about lack of MTV? It's mentioned on NTL website as being part of Basic MMDS.

Yeah but in the fine print underneath it says

"MTV Always slightly ahead, MTV leads, others follow. Totally in touch with its audience and the music scene, MTV is intelligent, sexy and humorous, delivering popular music programmes in it's own unique way. MTV is currently available to Dublin customers only."

So, going by the website it seems Waterford is MTVless if you have MMDS.

NTL's digital MMDS is pathetic compared to Chorus MMDS digital.
    Chorus have way more channels.

    Chorus

    NTL

To the best of my knowledge NTL and Chorus have no over lap in any areas, therefore if one is available in an area the other is not. I am currently moving also and have elected to go with NTL MMDS Digital over SKY which I have had over the past 18 months. After reading this thread and others Imight regret my decision, I have the instrallation booked but now am hopeing the test fails. What is the quality of the signal like on NTL MMDS Digital. Is the signal consistant or similar to an analogue airel does it get good and bad depending on location, weather etc.

Like all digital broadcasts, the quality of the signal is not an issue unless it falls below a certain level. All digital signals incorporate error correction to deal with less than perfect reception.
Once the signal dips below the threshold level the picture will start freezing and breaking up making it completely unwatchable.
Like analogue transmissions the signal quality is effected by all the usual criteria such as the weather, geography and distance to the transmitter.

You can get UTV/C4 on sky digital at the moment, but you have to do a bit of work. The link below tells you all you need to know!!

No, you can't. That can only be done with a UK Sky card. It is still encrypted on Irish cards. That link you posted is only for people with UK cards to get the regional variants.

Get a free to air viewing card, theres plenty availible for sale. And if you dont know what a fta card is go to the satellite forum.

    Music? Unique?
The rest of it seems to be lies, so maybe it is avalible to non dublin addresses

Why not get digital choice and you get 2 or more music channels plus many more extra channels for an extra 5 euro a month.

Was in friends house with NTL mmds digital in Waterford.
Its fairly ok.Better than advertised. About 50 channels.
    It has three mtv channels.

I've had fierce trouble with NTL MMDS so far, think it's mainly cus NTL's customer support service is useless. Channels just kept randomly dissapearing and only showing a black screen. After endless calls to support, sitting on hold for 30 minutes at a time and nearly 5 engineer call outs they replaced my old analogue ariel, so far all seems ok but I wouldn't count on it.

In case you ever have to deal with them, you ring support and they tell you a support engineer will be out in the next 24 - 48 hours. So not only do they expect you to wait at home for 2 days but they won't even guarantee to call you before they come. I think NTL forgets that people have to work. A couple of time's I worked from home and they didn't even come within the 48 hours - grrrrrrr - I HATE NTL!!!!!

I'm seriously thinking of moving to SKY now, only thing is that its a little bit more expensive. Do not go with them if you gotta pay for connection, if its free then you got nothing to lose - i.e. give it a shot and if its crap just go for sky.
