just after building a new machine amd 64 3500+ gigabyte nforce3 939 board 2gb of ram and 500gb hdd spacejust wondering should i overclock or not?
my last machine was a 2500 barton overclocked to 2.2ghz running as a 3200 multiplier was 11.5 and every now and agin it went unstable however i have read that the amd64 are extremely overclockable oh and btw my cpu temp wont go above 16 degrees woo hoo

welllll, i have just bought a s75...(see main rig) i use to also have a barton at the same speeds (secondary pc) and well to my knowledge AMD64's dont overclock that much in terms of clock speed..i mean i was told i may only get 100 or 200mhz out of my chip but it also seems in terms of figures they wont do much more but a 100mhz here or there is meant to be pretty damn noticeable in an AMD64..so i dont know if it would be worth it or not...with a set up like that i guess you can pretty much run anything flat out (depending on vid card) i know im not having any problems and i dont even have the latest gen card

i wouldnt reaaallly bother overclocking unless you like benchmarking and stuff im only overclocking my bits for 3dmark01 so i can see what score i can pull..im not doing it for games and tbh im not noticing that much a difference

btw unless your using some pretty nifty water cooling i reckon your thermal probe is on the blink...is the 3500+ a newcastle chip..coz there temps seem to be way off on MSI boards and i also heard a few complaints on gigabyte boards..i may be wrong..but 16 degrees seems damn low..since ive got a zalman 7000b in "normal" (fastest it will do) and my cpu at stock is 34 idle...

No need to overclock until its worth your while. I.e. it starts being to slow to use :p

If you're doing a lot of video encoding etc, then go ahead. But if you're just gaming and browsing the web, don't bother. Unless ya want to :p

i thought that about the heat however the fan i have on it is the stock one but its pure copper, i read a few reviews when i got it to make sure and apparently that temp could be right cos the stock cooler is top and something about how the cpu runs as well read it on two sites trying to find the links again if i do i will post the links up

Im sorry to say but that temp is almost definetly a wrong reading. Theres no way a CPU can run that cool with a stock heatsink, CombatCow has a S939 3800+ watercooled and it runs ~30's idle.

If you cant get it over 16 at load then the sensor missreading( you need a BIOS update to fix the problem). (does MBM show the same reading? and the BIOS?)

On the overclocking thing, think your one of the few that has S939 chip, but im sure it overclocks roughly the same as the S754 chips. What Ram did you get ?

i was actually thinking it couldnt be that good,

2gb of kingston heatsink pc3200 ram the giga boards bios is easy to overclock with but because it is a new socket i dont know what to bring it up to i would like to see what the most i can get out of it

Well you won't get too far with pc3200 ram unless it's low timing ram. You could then loosen the timings and it should overclock a bit. Try voltage increases as well

Your temps are way off like the others said. Find out your real load temps first by running prime 95 while monitoring the temps for about 15-20 mins.

Providing it's reading correctly you can start overclocking. Find out the max safe voltage and temp for your processor and then overclock until you reach either one of these. If you reach the temp first then get yourself a better cooler.

There's plenty of other limiting factors as well. You just have to know how to spot what it is. At the moment my psu is stopping me from getting mine further. The 12v rail which powers the processor and mobo droops to 11.6 and when it gets hot it loses stability and powers off. I can get to 3.6 but with a better psu I'd say I'll get 3.8-4.0ghz. I spent 110e on this psu as well. Not like it was cheap.
