Are those free websites that come with eircom internet packages any good?
I might start a simple website or are there any better free hosts?

First off lay off the vbcode will ya,

Second off generally speaking eircom/iol/utv free webspace is fine,
    - You get no adverts displayed
    - allow ftp access
    - no limit on amount of visits

Depending on what *free* webhost you got with
    - adverts displayed on all webpages (or atleast some)
    - 1GB bandwidth limit per day (afaik this is the case with geocities/yahoo))
    - do not always allow ftp access, you must use http uploads (which suck imho)

Personally if you have it go with ISP webspace or actually pay for decent webspace its generally much better then so called free webspace

'Real' Irish hosting can be had for less than the price of two pints a month these days, it all depends on what you are hosting and how important it is to you.

If you've never done web design before, start with one of the free ones definitely! I can't see you coding PHP, fiddling with databases or SSI before you do a bit of HTML work, so the likes of eircom have every(one)thing you need! Piles of tutorials out there, just google something like "creating web pages".
