    From todays indo:
FISH numbers and species have shown an "astonishing" increase off the south west coast, according to the organisers of the biggest angling event held in Europe this year.

Some fish were exotic, but native numbers were also found in abundance over the past two weeks of the angling competition.

The presence of more than 40 different species of fish caught on anglers' hooks is due to the dramatic decline in commercial inshore and trawler fishing vessels in the area, rather than to warmer waters as a result of weather changes, according to a rare-fish expert with the Department of the Marine.

The increase is being hailed as an example of what can be achieved in stock recovery in a short timeframe. The Failte Ireland European Boat Angling Championships, which has just ended, drew some 210 anglers from 16 countries.

Fish caught included tropical trigger fish, red sea bream, tadpole fish, dragonets, gar fish, as well as the more common species such as pollack, cod, gunard and whiting.
