I have a Hauppauge USB thingy and to use it is is best to select the country and input type eg Ireland & Cable or Ireland & Antenna...it then autotuned quite ok..

I use a Hauppauge PVR 250 card and it autotunes just fine (though it does not find all channels on NTL cable when searching for cable channels - I have to autosearch antenna frequencies as well for E4, Channel 4 and Discovery amongst others).

Signal strength seems to be much more important with tuner cards than plain ol' TVs. What are you feeding into it (antenna, cable, etc)? Try a cable booster if you have one around as well between the tuner and the antenna/cable - really improves things.

As parsi said, make sure you have Ireland set as your country or if you need to set a standard, select PAL I.

What apps are supplied with your card? WinTV2000? If so, go to Menu -> Help -> About WinTV and make a note of the version. I can then check how this compares to my own and let you know exactly what options you should be looking at in the software.

If you have NTL, check out their website as they have all the frequencies for each channel. Thats how I setup mine.

/OT how do you find the USB model? I am thinking of buying one.

Any good for video capture? I want to capture my wedding video so I can transfer it to DVD.

Its alright - I got it to connect to a Video sender - the idea being I could sell the TV in the bedroom and move the pc in there...the selling didn't work out so I am actually stuck with the yokey now sitting in a drawer now that the initial "oh look it works" period has finished ..Regarding video capture it has s-video input and line-in (as well as ANT in). The utilities with it have capturing software as well...

So I would be open to reasonable offers...though I should really post it in For Sale..

Make sure that you have the correct country code selected. Plus then make sure that you are on the right signal. a basic antenna connection shoud be set to PAL, dunno what NTL connections would use. Presumably the same. and just double check then that your connection can pick up TV signals on a normal TV.

i use fly2000 for flyds for watching/capture and find both very good, much better than wintv2000 personally, but i only have an old wintv pci card (fiver off ebay) that doesn't have an mpeg chip, so my capture formats are limited to mjpeg (which is pretty good, although thirsty on HD space), but they're both still very good. i then use virtualdub to compress to divx/mp3 which also does a fine job.

here's the ntl (dublin) frequencies if you're interested.

    Channel/Frequency
    The Discovery Channel 48 MHz
    Channel 4 56 MHz
    E4 64 MHz
    Network 2 176 MHz
    TV3 184 MHz
    RTE 1 192 MHz
    UTV 200 MHz
    TG4 208 MHz
    BBC 1 216 MHz
    BBC 2 224 MHz
    Sky One 232 MHz
    Nickelodeon/Link/Euronews 248 MHz
    MTV 256 MHz
    Sky Sports 1 264 MHz
    Sky Premier 272 MHz
    Sky News 280 MHz
CNBC / Pay Per View 408 MHz
    Sky Sports 2 304 MHz
    Sky Sports 3 312 MHz
    Sky Movie Max 312 MHz
    Pay-Per-View 352 MHz

Them frequencies on the ntl site are very out of date (a few years at least), a full up to date list can be found here: http://www.theairwaves.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1577&Itemid=36 :)

    Hi

Check the volume in the "Volume Controls" in Windows, the same happened to me last week, make sure that the "Line in" is not in Mute.

    regards
