Joey - First Impressions

Managed to get to view the first episode... First impressions... it could work.

There's the obvious character introductions which need to be done, but there was no stunt casting. The jokes were good & familiar, as an introductory episode it was much better than Friends one.

    Love the OLLYWOO gag.

    Verdict: very watchable.

Is it just channel 5 that are showing it?

Saw it and to be honest it loos like a desperate attempt to make someone semi famous abit more famous, I've seen people compare it to Fraiser wtf??
Fraiser is high-brow comedy Joey is just low.

Nope. RTE will show it in the old Friend's Monday night slot.

When is it on on five?

And will there be any repeat showings?

But is that not the idea? People are comparing it to frasier just because it is a spinoff. They are targeted at totally different audiences.

    in a word, tripe.

Bad jokes, bad script, bat sets, bad acting, bad delivery and a bad premise.
Joey in friends got boring.. "oh look, he's a smooth talker, but he's also a bumbling idiot! ha!"
Now he and his nephew are going to teach each other life lessons? "You teach me how to get women, I teach you how to not fall down"... what a horrible (and extremely dated) idea!

I heard they re-shot the pilot with new cast, so maybe the new first episode is better than the one i saw, but basically, I couldn't get to the end of it.

Judging from unaired pilots I saw of Buffy and Red Dwarf, doubtful.

They only re-cast the neighbour & re-shot her scenes. Pity as she's extremly fit & didn't seem to wear a bra at all...

It's not on five. It'll be on Channel 4 and RTE2, most likely starting in November or December.

Any Friends fan would know that C4 didn't buy the rights for Joey as the price tag was too expensive, so five stepped in and bought the rights.

Also, they hold the syndication rights for 'Joey'. which means if a Digital/cable channel (E4, Sky One, paromunt etc.) want to broadast it, they HAVE TO PAY five for rights to show it!

BTW, I think I heard Will Leahy or Michael Cahill on 2FM say a while ago that RTE will show it at the end of September? :D Correct me if I heard wrong!

RTÉ 2 apparently will the first channel outside the USA to show it

Of course that also means that they'll be the first to stop showing it after it gets the boot stateside.

I as a citizen of Ireland feel so honored because of this, of course its another good reason to pay your tv license fee...

    Channel Four didn't buy it.

Cabaal, are you a TV license inspector? :)

Joey would hardly tempt me to buy my viewing license..

.. wooden characters, bad acting, truly awful jokes, cringeworthy moments! I've a feeling if the show goes ahead, the nephew (actor Paulo Costanso) will be the only one who'll become a star out of it! At least he's got somewhat comic timing.

I'm afraid the only reason i need to pay my TV license fee is SCRUBS!!

I don't get though why they choose the most uninteresting of the "friends" characters. joey was very predictable and boring, couldnt imagine wanting to watch a show about him

Umm he was fairly popular and LeBlanc was one of the few who was bothered doing a spin off. That's the main reason. And yes by himself he has the potential to annoy the hell outta me. The pilot's okay but not a patch on the cream of current US comedy - Scrubs/Arrested Development/Curb Your Enthusiasm.

She was the only reason i made it to the end of the episode....maybe she turned out to have a sordid past or something.... :D

Fraiser is aimed at people who don't know what's funny, probably the same as Joey is. So there's your comparison.

What? Apart from a few bad seasons from when Niles got married to just before the final season, Frasier is hillarious!

Acording to one website I read, can't remember where but anyway, during test screenings all the characters were received well except for her, so they re-cast her and changed her character a bit. I haven't seen any of the episodes but she had a couple of stand out points that would have made the show watchable :D
Here's hoping it'll be watchable anyway, there's enough crap on TV at the moment without any more coming along.

well it's not due to start till sept 9 or have i got that wrong. Anyway they seem to have replaced her with another cutie but this one has some "neurotic" tendencies written into her character now.... perhaps the lack of bra was deemed offensive.....

No Joey is aimed at the kind of people that continued to watch Friends religiously till the end even after the ****e that was S4+
    :p

yeah, I'm kinda with ya there.. I mean, by the time Friends was in its latter seasons, Joey failed to make me laugh much. Monica and Chandler too.

But Joey just became a one trick pony, and I regularly found myself doubting the sanity of anyone who was still rolling around in stitches at "how you doin'?" ten years later or a 'hilarious' joke about Joey and food. It was also hard to still believe he was meant to be the stud of the 6 and regularly shagging when his good looks practically faded away after the second or third season and he became bigger and bigger.

He's the last person I would have picked for a spin-off, and I don't see it lasting more than a season.

Couldn't agree more - it was awful. I only wished they'd realise how crap his apartment set was too (remind anyone else of where they lived in Married With Children?) and decided to reshoot that as well.

Oh, and all the unfunny breast jokes in the first few minutes. And the 20 minutes worth of poor jokes that followed.

I'm willing to accept that it may get better, but there is a part of me that think that if the producers learned how to 'master' their craft during 10 years of Friends, then this should've been rip-roaringly funny.

It wasn't. Just like the last few seasons of Friends.

I'm starting to wonder if Joey will be lucky enough to survive until Christmas. Not without even more changes, anyway...

So, episode 1 has been shown. I'm not going to download it, the pilot was woeful!

Any reports on what episode 1 is like? Is the story the same?

I've heard the story is the same but yet to confirm it, I'm sure I'll find out soon enough :(

Frasier is great. Cos its not dumb humour. Although it got a bit weird at the end...it ws still ten seasons of greatness!

Looks like they're off to a good start. It drew the highest ratings of the week.

Not nearly as big as Friends season opener last year - but nobody expected that.

Thats because friends had what 8 seasons behind it?, also they were forever pegging that the coming soon season would be the "final one", its properly the only reason people kept watching it so they could see it die slowly and painfully :)

Does anyone else keep expecting Chandler to appear? It is really weird to see Joey delivering Chandler jokes. Like when his sister is on set and says that everyone thinks that she is an actress and Joey says "that is because you have big fake boobs and are crazy".
