Dont you need a unique serial to order a cd? maybe you don't.

Nope, never asked me for anything other that Name and address.

I stand corrected and majorly shocked.
Though MS would ask for a serial number to help combat pirates and the like?

    Guess not.

As far as I was aware the pack is designed not to work with the most commonly used pirate reg numbers, dont know how exactly but that was Microsofts word on it, make of it what you will.

Has anyone noticed on the site to order the SP2 CD, Microsoft actively encourage you to share this CD with family and friends who may have XP?

Could this be the start of something new for Microsoft? :D

    Yep, I think you're right.

I just downloaded and installed SP2. XP used to use about 130MB of RAM. Now it uses 230MB!!!

It takes forever to boot. Lucky I've been intending to upgrade my comp or I would have been mighty pissed off.

Well i guess the more pc's that aren't ****ing up because of MS limitations the less grief they get about being insecure.

No, you can almost guarantee there will be problems ;)

Its a biatch any other shoddy product manufacturer's would just go out of business. (apart from fiat i guess)

    hmm
i cant download it for some strange reason.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Mistmyr

I put SP2 onto my backup (old PC :D ) last week and have been messing around with it for a couple of days.

I does seem to delay startup by a couple of secs nothing dramatic but its there.
Also uses more resources to run (Firewall, and other new security setting i think)

All in all its worked and hasnt killed anything on me yet..

But 2 be honest ill still wait for the next BIG fix before i put it on my main machine, most of the PC mags and online community seem to thing its still full of holes and it will be a few more weeks, months before a truely stable release is out.....

    Just my 2$

Installed it two days ago. Went to run Nero 6 today and was forced to update nero because compatability problems.
Seems totally designed for people who aren't technical.
I mean if you have your own firewall and know how to manage your own anti-virus i cant see too many other benefits. or am i missing the point?

No you're not. If you have your own firewall and onw av then maybe there wasn't much point in installing it?

The MS site lists what you need to upgrade once you install. Nero, Norton and Unreal 2004 are the more common ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

so there is no point in download it?

I think that as far as Microsoft and pirated software goes, they caved in over SP2 due to its security fixes. I read something to that extent on Slashdot I think. There's no point cutting out half of Windows users from a big security patch when you're getting so much flak about it as it is. :p

The reason for SP2 working on all XP machines, even pirate ones, is so would be attackers will have far less targets to use, secure all the machines on the net, or so I read way back when.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,258 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Secure ALL the machines on the net? I was actually gonna doubt that microsoft said that themselves... but i guess i don't, seeing as they seem to think that they're the only OS out there. And... thinking about it, i guess they are, in some peoples narrowminded eyes anyways, seeing as they're licensed to feck on every new machine bought off the shelf (yes i know i shuddered too, but ya know, noobs will be noobs...).

I thought all mac OS's were secure? and all the linux ones?
Thanks for commenting on the very relevant point that i'm only one month old, I supose when I get older i'll be more intelligent.

What is it with people looking at join date and post count?
Just to tell you a good friend of mine got ripped off on boards because he trusted some guys post count, means jack sh!t.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Have upgraded about a dozen machines in the last 2-3 weeks, ranging from PII to P4. No problems whatsoever

Imho it is easier than installing xp (with or without sp1) and then having to apply a hundred patches

We'll be waiting another while yet for final beta Longhorn anyway...
