Marshall MG100DFX

I've been playing for 2 years, but still only have a useless 10W Yamaha amp. I'm thinking of buying a Marshall MG100DFX but its €399, and I dont know if Id be better off buying a new guitar (my current one is also a crap Yamaha something or other) or some other gear. Funds are extremely limited at the moment, so this would be a big long term purchase. Does anyone know anything about this amp, or have any other advice?

I'm in the same position... playing two years now with a crap 10W amp. Only I bought a new guitar and now I'm looking for a new amp. I've been looking at this amp and others but I'm finding it very difficult to choose.

One thing though, you'd probably be better off buying online. The Marshall 100dfx is ?399 in Musician Inc. but I've seen in a lot cheaper online. This ebay shop has it for £235 (~?350) but then you have to take shipping costs into account.

Bare in mind, a good guitar will sound **** through a bad amp but a **** guitar can sound good through a good amp. If you're not planning on jamming with a drummer, look at the Roland Microcube. It's 2W, ?105 from thomann, incredibly loud and sounds amazing.

All valve marshall combo for €475...not a bad price:

If you're gonna buy a guitar for the long term, then save up and get a good guitar, a genuinely good guitar. You'll play your guitar all the time, you won't always play your amp at every gig and rehearsal. €400 doesn't buy a good guitar.

As for amps, check out Peavey, they do some decent amps in your price range and sound a whole lot better than the solid state Marshalls.

I own that amp (mg100dfx) and then didnt buy a better guitar. WHen I got into a band I didn't use the amp once and the only action it saw was a duster. Meanwhile I was pulling hair over the piece of crap guitar I had wishing I didnt buy the amp.

And the moral of the story - Save up more and get a guitar!!

Thing is I will be jamming with a drummer every day, from a week from now after I move to Galway. I dont want to be stuck with a useless 10W amp when practising with him.

But is there any point having a deadly guitar playing through a shít amp?

Why didnt you use it when you got into a band? Was it not loud enough? Couldnt u just hang a mic over it and run it through the PA if it wasnt loud enough? It seems good enough to me, 2 overdrive channels, 3/4 effects and 100W.

Because that would be pointless and the effects on it where not required. I suppose thats just me saying that cause the band I was in had an excellent setup (I didnt even bring my own guitar sometimes). But still I think that a good guitar should come before amp because the pickups on your guitar will seriously hinder the amps preformance but a good guitar will help your playing and youd probalbly come off better regardless of amp.

PsThe effects/overdrive are no reason to buy that amp!! Trust me

It's not a great amp. There're much better ones out there for near enought the same price. I played one in music shops for a long time and got sick of the blandness quite quickly.

You only need around a 30w-50w to practise with a drummer. In fact you can gig with a 30-50w with a PA.

Yes, because in my 15 years of playing, I've rarely used my own amps at rehearsals or gigs. I've always used my own guitar though, through a variety of amps.

You'll get more out of a great guitar than a great amp at this level. A shyte guitar will mean that every time you play, you're playing a shyte guitar. Every time. The times when you're just doodling around, not even plugged in, you'll be playing a shyte guitar every time. Is that what you want?

The worst fuking thing would be playing through a great setup with a piece of crap guitar going out of tune every minute, with an output comparable to putting a mic in front of it unplugged. It would drive you insane. Minimum quality guitar for gigging inho would be around the Yamaha Pacifica range which are about €200

If your guitar is of this quality or better than a new amp wont be a mistake.
However a good guitar is rarely a mistake...

Personally I think amps that have the effects built in are average at best across the board, the effort and space that is wasted on sub-par effects should be used to make a better amp.

I'd agree about getting a good guitar first, best decision I ever made was to buy a decent bass.

I'm gonna plug my gear again, it might be of interest to the original poster:

I know this thread is a few days old s hopefully you haven't went and bought the marshall already. I got one in May and it keeps messing up. The volume is going weird at the minute. Heard of a lot of people having similar problems with them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 Gillzer

Thanks people, good advice, I'm definitly not going to but it now.
Only problem is that I'm not sure what I'm going to but instead! I really dont want to buy a decent guitar and play it through my 10W amp, and I cant afford both a good guitar and a decent amp.
Guess all I can do is keep saving, unless.... anyone have a bank-robbing-monkey I can borrow?

    Thanks anyway lads.

I think you should think about selling the 10W and getting a microcube. It's only 2W but it's remarkably loud and sounds incredible!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

If you're selling the 10W, i'll be willing to take it off your hands.

i had the same problem i wanted a guitar and amp at the same time and the tryed to fob me off with that marshall MG100dfx for 399, and im not havin it
first off , marshall make good enoughs amps yeah but the MG100DFX is not a valve amp so dont bother. marshalls are really only good with valves, ive been looking at crates and laneys too but for around the 400 euro mark well you cant really get anything decent unless its second hand...... shud really look into saving more money and getting some valvea amps and cabinets , hell yeah its expensive but feck me you notice the difference.

I've an all-valve Fender Blues Junior amp for sale here:

    http://muppet.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=189966

    Flexible on the price...

Valve is the way to go.

I also am a proud owner of the MG100DFX. Love it. I've an Ibanez GA60 and i just play at the weekends when i get home. First thing i do is set it toheavy metal settings and thrash for about an hour. Nothin better sounding. Not the greatest clean but with a few pedals you'll be grand, highly recommend an original crybaby wah wah. have fun

I'm really lookin for info regardin the spider - does anyone strongly reccomend or strongly disagree that this is the best new amp for it's money.

The Spider II's are fantastic amps. You couldn't be disappointed with one. It's on my "To get" list.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,351 ✭✭✭fitz

The Fender is 15W, but it's all valve, so it's about as loud as a fifty watt digital or solid state amp.

I play it rehearsing and hear it well over the drums. It's a little beast.

The post right before yours is dated 6-10-2004?

Jeez I really hope that guy didn't go for the MG in the end...

He probably did go for it and has already changed amps a few times since that.

This must be the oldest thread ever brought back on the instruments forum.
    Almost 5 fricken years old.
