So how was Madonna yesterday? I've heard VERY mixed reviews (the weather didn't seem to help), and I've even heard that she was miming some of the songs....

    Whats the verdict?

She was late on stage by 45 mins. Ppl started to boo up at the back cause we were waiting for so long, and in the rain. The opening sequence was to me personally crap. Then during the gig she kept disapearing for costum changes, so it was her "singing" a song, then we watched the dancers for about 5 mins, then her again, and it carried on like that.

After the rain, it was a beautiful night. Moon was out, but she failed to live up to what i expected.

    My 2 cents.

Yeah was up at the back for the booin'...........
Well speakin as a bloke...she does a pretty good show...better than most, hard wirkin girl is madge.....but the best for me was seein' the plug bein pulled on Iggy... I am a fan and glad to see him keepin it real even if 70,000 people screamin wimin' were in a different world...
Ah well the missus was happy and she made me wake up with a smile...
Yeah the gig was well worth it..!! :D

Yesterday was my first time at Slane and I can tell you now it'll have been my last. Fair enough, it looked like there were fantastic things going on on-stage but most of it was lost for those of us on the hill. The atmosphere in the crowd was pretty bad. In fact on the way out one of the safety announcers was saying "Did you have a good time?" and "Are you coming back next year?", both of which received a loud chours of "No!".

Between the chaos trying to get a bus at Parnell Sq., the terrible support acts (didn't hear one person singing along with or even clapping for Iggy), the usual ripoff prices (30 euro for a programme, 7 euro for a plain burger and soggy chips), and the pain of trying to get out of the place (why oh why were they trying to get ambulances and garda trucks up the road immediately after the concert, making progess slow and difficult for all?), it was a miserable experience.

Only positive was the weather, which was better than expected.

(Oh yes, and Madge was miming.)

Who else was supporting (other than Iggy?). There was no mention on any of the radio ads for the gig. I assumed that they were either crap or unknown. Usually plugging a band for a gig like this might get people to come for that band (who wouldn't otherwise have gone to maz) :)

The other support was Paul Oakenfold.

There was an audible difference between the songs involving complex dance routines and the ones where she just stood there singing into a microphone. I also have difficulty believing she was "rapping" live during 'American Life'.

In general the whole thing was less a concert/gig and more a piece of musical theatre.

Not at all impressed with the overall concert.

The two supports acts was pathetic, anyone can spin a few records, Iggy did not do anything for anyone, a lot of people I know believed the Darkness were also going to be a support act and hence bought tickets.

Overall her performance was OK, not realy suited for an arena like Slane. A lot of people had left before the concert ended.

Have MCD issued a press release regarding The Darkness being removed from the bill? This is the second time this summer that MCD have advertised and sold tickets for a gig based on a support act that didn't play (the first being Sonic Youth with The White Stripes...).

AND the fourth time that a confirmed act did not play. Albeit for specific understandable reasons, (Jet at the White Stripes - Bowie at oxegen)

The plug was pulled on him as he had stepped on to Madonna's ramp and noly she is allowd on it.

Did they even say they were playing? Only an idiot would spend that kind of money and time treking to Slane to see the Darkness

I'd be very hasty to put Bowie into the same category, MCD was not at fault for his cancellation (even if they were at fault for not filling his place with something decent). Was there a reason given for Jet not playing?

Crap. They played at Reading on Friday night and they were pulled from the line up at Slane weeks ago.

I think it's perfectly fair to include Bowie in MCD's list of f*ck ups! No one minded that he pulled out due to illness, but it was pure cheekiness of MCD to only allow refunds to people who had bought tickets just for the Sunday at Witnness just to see Bowie.

People should have been given a partial refund or allowed a full refund because the Darkness pulled out. They didn't even bother to find a replacement act! And i'm sure The "We'll play at the opening of an envelope" Frames were free yesterday

I think he was talking about Jet, not The Darkness. And the reason I don't include Bowie is because it was a health problem discovered the week of the gig. In the case of Sonic Youth at The White Stripes and The Darkness at Madonna, it was a case of a band being used as a heavy draw for ticket sales and then pulled after the initial sales with either no reason (The Darkness) or an obviously shameful reason (Sonic Youth). I don't deny Bowie was handled poorly by MCD, but it's a completely different type of situation to what was being discussed here.

wow some very grumpy people replied to this.... I am speaking for myself on this one but i had an excellent time. Madonna put on a great show! Any Madonna fan knows that dancing, costumes, stage sets are integral to a madonna performance- always have been.... so i dont get why people are giving out about that. Obviously its not what you expect at a slane gig, but to be fair a pop act is not you expect at a slane gig. I loved the circus inspired set, loved like a prayer. I was in the pit and the atmosphere was fantatsic there but i have heard it was **** at the back, but generally people who end up on the back are people with freebie tickets who didnt want to be there in the first place. Though i wish i had been further back, because the platform which came out from the stage actually blocked the view for anyone who was short which was a bit of a pain but i was so close that i could see every detail so that was cool. Slane was undoubtedly the wrong venue for madonna but to be fair i knew that before i got there, and i still thought it was amazing and anyone i talked to at the gig said the same

I was there last night aswell, I thought as it was my first Slane gig I was very disappointed, so was the person I was there with. First of all we were expecting The Darkness to appear but to no avail. Then we had to listen to 2 crappy DJ's in the pouring rain. Iggy pop was just dying to take his trousers off and for a 54 year old man(I think!!) I doubt I would be eager to see that!!!

Madge did put on a good show for the whole 20 mins she was on stage. Most of it was of her dancers entertaining us while she got changed! And for the miming thing I had my suspicions aswell!!

To sum it up a waste of money!!

Just wondering - how long exactly did Madonna stay on stage for?

Cos i read she arrived on at 9:15 (45 minutes late)... but i read somewhere else that Slane had a curfew of 10:30.

If so, a 75 minute headliner and two mediocre support acts for €90 sounds like a huge rip-off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭s8n

it's time to sort this out once and for all. Does anyone have a contact email for mcd?? the one on their site does'nt work. They cannot keep going the way they are f*cking with the gig going public as they see fit just as they have a virtual monopoly on it in this country.

She actually didnt appear on stage until half 9, an hour late! I was watching the clock!! And then she was off at 11.05. Although it was an hour and a half all she played was about 9 songs and even they weren't her best ones some I didnt even recognise! Also I don't know if this is typical of Madonna but she never even did an encore, not that the crowd asked for one cause I think they were all pretty pissed off at this stage. I thought it was just strange thats all!

People need to learn how to type.
Seriously, I get the whole abreviated thing. But "wos", I mean it takes the same amount of key strokes to type "was". I dislike having to decode your secret txt language. Theres a nice big keyboard in front of you, with keys waiting to be pushed.

I'm the most chilled person I know, but: "der wos very good apmasfear"? I despair for the future of this country if that's the best that can be done. "they wos no life to them bure crap they were" - I can safely say that I had a higher standard of spelling than this when I was 7 or 8 years old.

They must have done. I was checkin ebay all the previous week and there were a fair amount up there. The papers said that 75000 people attended - capacity was 80K...and y'know yerself how in some cases the numbers are bumped up...(i.e. undersold concerts and drug finds!)

There were 26 pieces for the Madonna set at Slane and there were vocals to 23 of them. She used a live-vocal backing track for the songs with energetic dance routines (Vogue, Nobody Knows Me and Die Another Day), so she actually performed live for most of the show. Even with a backing track she still sings over it. It is used to enhance the performance due to the dance routine and the effort they take.

I personally think the show was amazing and apart from the rain (which wasn't that bad) and the dreadful Iggy Pop, I had a fantastic time.

There were obviously people at Slane who don't actually like Madonna - why the hell did they go? Plus, everyone and his granny knew that The Darkness had pulled out.

This was never going to be a normal Slane event and anyone who went expecting that was sure to be disappointed - it was first and foremost a Madonna show. I'm sure the Madonna fans weren't disappointed.

Alot of mixed opions there..... We'll I was near the front for the first hour and it was very good apart from some songs where she wasn't even on the stage singing them. She did mime some songs due to the dancing she had to do which is fair enough....Moved to the back near the end of the show and the difference was unbelivable!! The sound was really bad, alot of echoes and the timing was a second or two out... There was quite a few people leaving but I wouldn't blame them if they stayed at the back for the whole show...

So I recommend if you ever goto slane NEVER STAY AT THE BACK!!! ;)

So she did mime. Absolutely ridiculous. Ever heard of a guitarist miming because the chords were too difficult to sing to at the same time? You were conned, and I'd demand my money back if I was you. Madonna = Fraud.

Dancing requires different use of your lungs than playing guitar. It is considerably easier to play guitar and sing, than it is to do a complex dance routine and sing.
