It seems that NTL here in galway are broadcasting the 4 UK channels and others in widescreen. Its annoying if you have 4:3 tv's like me and you get half the screen missing (Top and bottom) also its very hard like yesterday to watch the footie results and tables as the text is much smaller!

I'd complement NTL for doing this, it shows they are looking to the future or it's a mistake.

They are doing it in Waterford aswell.
    Its not the full widescreen.
Its in between 16:9 and 4:3.
Probably 14:9 or close to that.
Its to give the best of both worlds.

14:9 is the proper aspect for many programmes on the UK terestrial channels.
All the widescreen programmes are produced with non-widescreen viewers in mind, to this end they are formatted so all essential content is visible in 14:9 ratio as a comprmise.
All of these programmes are 14:9 on terestrial transmissions and should be like that on analogue cable.
