Isn't there some way to donate weekly/monthly straight from your bank account? I thought I remembered being able to donate to GOAL like this, but I can't find anything on their website. So anyone know how I'd go about doing this?

By the way, are GOAL the best charity to donate to for those particular causes? Or Trocaire? Or someone else?

You're wondering how to do this? You must be the only person in Ireland who hasn't been visited by some pleb to try signing you up to a tenner a month direct debit scheme...

Go into the City Center and walk for 30 seconds you will find out how to do it in no time.

Actually I get stopped every time I'm in town, but what I should've asked is... How do I donate to charity without dealing with knobheads?

I'd like to know how to donate anonymously also - I give regularly to charity but I hate the idea of them getting my name and bombarding me with stuff! Also - slightly off topic - which is best charity to give money to Darfur?

Probably Concern. They've a section on Darfur on their site, and you can set up a DD with them if you want.

Concern do a standing order thingy They dont take it out of your account. The bank sends it to them. slightly better than direct debit in my opinion.

They asked for a tenner a month but they settled for five a month. fiver will do the people they are helping alot more good than it will do me in this rip off country but a tenner would be pushing it. Would only spend the fiver on fags anyway so what the hell

I found this old thread as I was searching for Trocaire - but by the way, if anyone's interested in supporting a charity, I'd be happy to recommend Suas as very responsible with your donations and we (well, I work for them) don't bombard people with pamphlets. www.suas.ie

I used to give focus my moneyz when I was working three years ago. It was only a tenner and I didn't mind, but when I started first year I was down to my last 15 quid one week waiting for the grant and they had nicked my cash! And when me da lodged twenty (didn't want to ask him for much) they went and took that months donation as well! Bloody cheek, I could've ended up homeless at that rate. Anyways point is I don't mind giving money but I think it would be much better if charities could have a cap on accounts, stopping them from taking money until the account had X amount in it, so people wouldn't be short when they really needed the cash themselves.

If you would like to donate but are unsure who to donate to or would like to vary who you donate to as I was when I came across this website today.

Only charity I donate to is the Lifeboats.
I simply can't comprehend how that go out on search & rescue missions in high seas.
Bravest people around-along with firemen of course

The Hanley Centre-now that's the type of charity I wouldn't support

Feel Free to donate to The Extreme Evil Empress Training Camp for Evil Henchmen. Your pennies a day can help a lost soul find his true calling in life!

    That's :

Give to a group called Human Concern International because my sis used to work with them and well, she made me. Everybody says they'll do this it seems, but I'd like to do some sort of charity work after I graduate (as in the third world, not Westmoreland Street!)

Ah good intentions, my mortal enemy. The idea of helping people, going to work for a charity after my college work sounds nice, but I'm not good with old or needy people. That makes me feel bad. :(

I donate when I can (time and money), mostly to Habitat who really make a difference building houses for people who can't afford to.

Jaysis, this is an old thread!

Anyway, I ended up donating 30 quid a month to GOAL. I remember my ma saying 30 quid was a lot but the way I reasoned it was at the time, I was making a tenner an hour and would get at least a 3 hour break every night. So for one lunch break a month where I sat playing poker, it wouldn't harm me to give up 30 quid. Had to cancel the direct debit when I left that job though.

I have a DD set up with Concern. IIRC if you donate E10 per month thats fine, however if you donate E20 p/m, the charity in question is able to double that amount by some form of government subsidy, and you can claim a certain amount on your tax allowances.
And before you start, no, i didnt set up my DD so i can claim tax back or anything like it, so there :p

Yep, if you donate over €250 a year the charity can claim back the tax you paid at your highest rate. For example, if you're on the higher band they can increase your contribution by 41%.

Several of my family, extended family and friends work for charities. Having spoken to them and heard the level of waste in some of them, I very rarely donate to anybody now.
I certainly wont give to any hospital charities - the health service gets millions every year to provide a hospital service so I think the taxpayer has already done his bit.

Fair play though to those who do set up regular donations, I just hope that some of your money actually gets to where you hoped it would go.
