noticed my dvd-rom has been running pretty slow for the last week since my last windows re-install. i checked the device manager and its set to PIO only mode with their being no option to set to DMA. Ive no idea if this was always the case but like i said theirs definitely been a decrease in performance recently. ive checked the BIOS and cant see an option to change this to DMA. ive also updated the firmware and had no joy.

anyone have any ideas on how to change it to DMA.

    setup:
    master slave
primary hard drive 1 PROBLEM DVD- ROM
    secondary hard drive 2 DVD-RW

running under windows xp. any other info needed just ask.
    thanks

The DMA settings aren't on the devices themselves in the Device Manager. If you go to the IDE Controller devices and look at their properties you'll see some drop down menu's with "PIO" and "DMA IF AVAILABLE" options.

    device type: auto detection(greyed out)
    transfer mode: DMA if available
    current transfer mode: PIO only
