    The specs look good.

As for a lcd screen I'm not sure who make good ones but what you want to look out for is response time and contrast ratio.

And a monitor that can at least support a resoultion of 1024x768 at 75hz.

I recently got a lcd with a response time of 25ms ( you would preferable want 16ms) and a contrast ratio of 400:1 which meant doom III was unplayable to me as it was too dark. you will something 500:1 or 600:1. If your not worried about games don't worry too much about what I just said. Have to say the picture on the lcd is so much sharper than my old crt. Of course the better the specs the more you pay. Just remember low response time and high contrast ratio the better. others might be able to help you out on area's that are important when its comes to lcds.

Its for a friend, Ye I got a Hitachi cml174sxw2 so I know what to look for in a TFT but I was just wondering if anyone knows any good 15 ones cause the 17s are too expensive, if he had the money I would get him a Hitachi or an imagequest

the Hitachi is 400:1 and 16ms and I find Doom 3 fine to play, except for the fact that its quite repetative and boring, but graphics wise its fine ;)

the one in the list is 450:1 and 25ms (shouldnt really ghost, and if it did he wouldnt care because he would be running HL2 at 60fps near full graphics and knows little bout pc specifics :D)

Anything with a low response time <16ms is prefect eg Viewsonic VP201 , Hitachi CML174B and CML 175B , Samsung 172X. I have a samsung 172x and I find it excellent and would highly recommend it. Note these model numbers may be out of date by now but in general the key is to check the response time. Komplett list it in the specs for most of their range. Hope this has been of assistance

Sorry I just realised that all of the above are 17" but Hitachi's range of CML15's are perfect for the job not to sure about samsung/viewsonic

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Are they all 15inch? 17inch is just TOO dear for my mate

[EDIT] 3 17s and a 20inch, these are too expensive, but thanks for the help, think ill get one of those samsung monitors the next time I pick up a TFT seems like a really good one, got a price?

Get a 19" CRT that will p1ss all over a crummy 15" 1024*768 LCD and will be cheaper aswell; believe me I have seen the difference between those kinda screens and it's just much better to have a high res and a big screen than saving space and a crummy screen!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

can you link to a good cheap 19"!!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭Pantera

This is very true a 19" CRT will give far better performance for a gaming rig and at a fraction of the price. Phillips 109E51 a good gaming item. Or anything from the samsung syncmaster range

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Oh whoops lol, thought he ment a 19" TFT! Now your making sense!

Sorry, not enough space for a CRT in his room, look its not about what *I* want, its for a friend, HE wants 15"TFT or bigger as long as budget is under €1500.01

If you got an upgrade kit from Komplett you would save over 200 that would get you a 9800XT and decent 15" or even 17" TFT off komplett.

    * 117212 - Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB

    Ok try this :)

Yeah you could get a AMD 64 3000 and a MSI K8N Neo Platinum Motherboard for about the same money your spending on motherboard and cpu. Probably just about beat the P4 3.0

I'd forget the Pentium 4. The Athlon 64 mostly performs better at games. The memory is fine, but if you go A64 just get one 1GB chip instead of 2. The choice of hard drive is grand too.

If I was you I'd get a decent 17" CRT and put the money I just saved into getting a better graphics card ( 6800 ) and a DVD burner ( You'll wonder how you ever did without one )

Flatscreens are nice if you get a good one. If you're going to game then you need an especially good one. With performance comes a lot of price.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

CRT is NOT an option, CRT is NOT, I repeat NOT an option, you can say its cheaper and better all day, but it is NOT an option!! I am well aware of the price, I have bought my self a great one, but space is minimal and so a CRT IS NOT AN OPTION.

Think that got my point across, Ill think about the 64bit

    jeeeees, that's quite a response

    simmer down

Looks good but i'd advide getting a 6800gt over the x800pro. It's simply a better card for around the same price.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Cool bloodbath ill look at the 6800, OK it may seem like I was boiling over a bit but I stated from the start that only an LCD would do and that he wanted an LCD and so talk of CRTs was irrelivent.

Looking over things now such as 64bit and 6800

havent read the full thread, but:
    * no DVD drive? burners are cheap enough nowadays.
    * Can you save a bit of money by going for an OEM graphics card?
    * I'd go for a 3rd party CPU HS/FAN. I have the thermaltake Silent Boost and it works great.
    * 160GB drive won't be that much more expensive
    * SATA versus IDE? SATA cables are neater, but IDE installs without drivers. You're not missing much by going for IDE.

Ye, been meaning to push it up to a DVD recorder.

Anyone know how much delivery would be on that??

Sata is not much better and so I dont want to pay the extra for neater cabling.

Can you link to an OEM GFX card?
Reatil Fan will be fine, I have always used them and they are perfect when not Overclocking.

Actually goind down to 80GB, hes doesnt need 120Gb and if he has it will fill it with crap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,372 ✭✭✭silverside

no i can't be bothered linking, check out the usual suspects, komplett, jes, overclockers.co.uk , should save 20-30 quid by giving up the retail pack.

no harm filling it up with 'crap' - i have all my music/films on my pc and it takes up about 100GB, but it's easier than digging around for cd's / dvd's.

retail will do fine but I wanted something quieter/cooler.

Also how come on the details of the monitor it gives the response of 25ms http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=301966&view=detailed

as you can see its edging close to €1500, so I think that the DVD drive should be dropped and picked up later and also lower the HDD for now and he can set up a raid later if he needs the space (which I highly doubt he will). This means he can get the 3000+ and since it is in essence a gaming machine this would be better than the "quality of life upgrades" like the HDD or DVD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,372 ✭✭✭silverside

sounds alright for a gaming machine. Make sure the response is < 20 ms though on the TFT.

OK here it is , done and dusted.

I ran through it with my mate and he said he would rather drop the X800 in favour of quality of life.
