    went for a interview recently

got a call back telling me they'd given the job to someone else

then they said it was right down to the wire between me and the other dude....

do you think they say that to everyone?

As for your question, does it really matter? Forget about that job. Move on. Apply for another one.

It's on the first page of the 'Let them down easy as you might never know when you'll need them again' chapter in 'Human Resources for Dummies' so I'd imagine they do. I'd say pretty much everyone here has been on the receiving end of that line at one point.

Ah sorry to hear that. I don't think they should bother saying that at all. I'd rather be told the other person was much more qualified than me, at least then you wouldn't feel as hard done by. Happened to me where I was told that it was between me and someone else. Waited nervously for the phonecall, only to be told that the other person got it. Was really upset cos had been for a few unsuccessful interviews at this stage. Then two days later they rang me to say that they'd changed their mind and decided to go with me, happy days!! Not to get your hopes up or anything.... I'm sure you've heard this about 58 million times but.... whats meant for you won't pass you by.

Too bad. Try to lie more in the future, they love that for some reason. [/bitter]

They were speaking the truth. Mostly firms are astoundingly rude to job applicants; they often don't even bother to send out a PFO. If they rang back, they were treating you special, like, in case they might hire you later.

Either that or they have someone nice in HR - no, couldn't be that.

Catbert is every HR manager ever born and to come. It's a scientifically proven, indisputable fact, I'm afraid.

No it's usually an indication that they did an eenie-meenie-miny-mo or the other guy said or did just one tiny little thing that clinched it.

Take as meaning that you're a good interview, and that you would have gotten the job if there were two positions.

been applying for a few jobs lately and i say companies are getting better at replying to people.

The last job i didnt get i got an email saying so. Then i tried firing my cv off to a load of companies by email (apperently it shows you are tech savy). Got a few standard we dont have a position at present but like to hold on to your CV for 6 months (why is it always 6 months)

Then seen an ad in the paper. didnt hear anything for 3 weeks and thought my cv got binned. Phone call out of the blue and got an interview. Went to the interview and hit for 6 by being asked to fill in a questionaire. (wasnt expecting that) All these question on what you bring to the company etc. lied my way through it using all the "buzz" words i could think of and spell.

Anyway went into the interview and was asked to read from a book it was a paragraph from a computer book.(again wasnt expecting that)was so nervous kept reading after i was supposed to have stopped. Went through the interview. Didnt hear from then for ages so i rang to check if they had made a decison and just didnt bother ringing me.They hadnt made there mind up.

Got another call last friday saying i got the job and i start monday.
I am looking forward to it.

so keep the chin up and keep trying.

I got that line once but it turned out I got the job, and so did the other guy.

Move on up and keep going etc.

My commiserations, but don't let it get you down. There are other jobs out there. You will find something. You just have to keep looking.

Have to say I'm surprised when I get a response these days.

As an aside I got an letter today inviting me to interview for a job I applied to about 2 or 3 months ago. Mad!

Did they not believe you when you ticked the box that said 'literate'? Do you mind me asking what type of job this is?

Possibly to (a) spook candidate - see how they handle the stress (b) see how well they can do 2 things at once (read and talk) (c) test confidence.

Got that answer once, after applying for one of the rare jobs that ever comes to light in my specialised domain. Then they got back to say they'd decided to hire both candidates (me and [homervoice]my best friend[/homervoice]. Then they got back again to say they'd gone bust.
All in all, a dramatic and ultimately heart-breaking few days.

Good to see HR hasnt came on since 2004!

I can't speak for the Company who interviewed you, but I know that we would never say that to anyone unless it was true. The best we would give would be "there was a very high standard....blah blah.." If someone interviews very well and it is really close, we would often contact them if something else came up. Don't be hard on yourself. It sounds like you did really well but it wasn't your turn. All interviews are good experience. Keep applying for things Something will come your way.
