running a diagnostic boot

I was wondering if there is a way to run a diagnostic on a motherboard while the PC boots?

The OS: SCO (boo! hiss!) Openserver release 5

Problem: External SCSI backup has the jumpers set to 3 but the OS will only see it if you scan for a jumper set to 4 (sorry for iggerence, I cant remember if the jumper is COM or IRQ settings. I'll check and edit the post to clarify).

What I want to do: run a diagnostic or monitor that will track what the Mobo does during Boot and see why this change is happening or what , if anyhting , has gone wrong.

I'm a microserf so I dont have much (read: any) skill with Unix so answers in monosyllables please :)

    dmesg prints out boot stuff.
you could also look in the logs, in /var
i dont know if thats what you mean, there is usually a scsi bios on the card that you cfan play with.
Also with 2.6 kernels there is prob with scsi, somtimes you need to use the noacpi boot option.
    Not sure if that helps.
